National Hispanic Scholarship?

This is what the Northeastern website says:

Students who are admitted to Northeastern and are recognized as National Merit Finalists, National Achievement Finalists, or National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars** will receive a $30,000 merit based award and may also be eligible for financial aid.
Northeastern National Merit, National Achievement, and National Hispanic Scholars will also be invited into The University Honors Program

Does this mean if you are admitted and are a National Hispanic Scholar that you automatically get the scholarship? It just seems to good to be true.

Yes. Automatic. There is 100 hour annual community service requirement.

I’m a NHS and I’m so happy! NEU is one of my top choices  glad to know I have merit right off the bat

Is this merit scholarship worth $30,000 a year or spread out over 4 years?

It is $15,000 per semester for 8 semesters (not for the semesters you coop)

Anyone familiar with 100 hour annual community service requirement ? What kind of service and how easy/difficult it is to fit into student’s life/study?

In the past there was the 100 hour requirement when the scholarships were full tuition - I don’t know if this year they will still have this requirement (although it will still exist for university scholars which is still full tuition). (Rumor has it their were just too many kids needing the 100 hours.) It can be difficult - many kids fit it in on breaks and summers (which you can do with prior agreement). They do set you up freshman year with local places but even a local place that says you can volunteer 5 hours each Saturday (or something similar) might not follow through for the entire year.

You can do all sorts of volunteer stuff - tutoring at local schools, helping at the local food bank, etc.
