I was in NHS for 2 years and CSF for 4 years and a lot of other clubs...however i forgot to list them on my application to UCLA...i still got in...they must not mean much to them

NHS definitely doesn't HURT your chances, obviously. However many people already mentioned that it doesn't really make a significant difference when you're applying to competitive universities where most other peers will be NHS members. Also, if a majority of your class is in NHS, then there definitely is a problem with your chapter or everyone has unusually high/similar GPAs

NHS at my school is lame.they want you to fill out a 10 page application and get sigs from everyone and their mother.the required gpa is 3.0 so basically everyone can join lol.ithey want 20 hours comm. Service every month and if you don't get them you go on some probation bs and your individual comm service they don't do anything. Most of the people in it are snobby as . So when I got invited to join last year I tossed it out. Then the other kids in my class and teacher were like "o_O *?" its lame because they force you so much to do the comm sevice that it loses its value and everyone only cares about their numbers.im gonna be one of the few intelligent people w/out the cord at graduation come may lmao.oh well.

I have a 8 page long application to fill out...and I need a signature from anyone who I've ever worked for. done community service for, or has been in activity with. I also have an essay to do...gah.

Same here... but NHS at my school is a pretty big deal, you have to have a 94 or 96 average [can't remember.. lol], and a bunch of the leadership/volunteer/extracurricular stuff and about a billion hours of community service, but it's not really like we're counting the hours to make sure we make the cut. Once you're in, they have community service projects that everybody gets involved in, but there's no obligation to be in them, so it's still volunteering. There are only about 20 people in it out of 3500 at the school, so I'd say it shows something to be in it [for my school anyway].

If colleges see that you have stellar stats but you dont have the energy/not involved in NHS, theyll think your selfish and have no time for EC's

NHS is pretty dumb at my school. As long as you are in top 50% you'll get in. We honestly have at least 200 members. Yeah...

NHS is a joke at my school. Anyone who does like 20 community service hours a year and maintains a 3.0 gets in. Once you're in, you don't do anything. Half the class gets in every year, but I decided not to join. I make up for it with a focus on other, more legitimate activities.

It’s around that time for NHS inductions. So I’m bringing back this thread to life.

Along with a link to xkcd…

http://xkcd.com/703/

NHS at my school is a MAJOR deal. Each year, they barely make any annoucncement about applications. We fill them out a month into school and usually only top 50 in the class are even allowed to apply (Our class size is around 520). And after that, you have to have community serivce, 5 teacher rec’s, and at least 3 leadership positions.

This year, out of the 40-50 that applied, only 8 got in. In total, there’s 25 kids in NHS, mostly seniors. It’s pretty exclusive and we have to do a lot of community service.

lol the kids that get invited in my school each year get cute little (cough, cheap) gold stickers to wear on their ID tags, along with a little ribbon. Some of the girls who got in actually cried. It’s supposed to be an honor…but at our school NHS has little to none influence. :/

National Honor Society – what in the world does it do? That is why I didn’t join.

My school has Cum Laude Society. Oh yeah.

^ So does mine! :D

^What the hell is that?

^ Basically honors the top 10% of all students towards the end of junior year, and then the top 20% towards the end of senior year. :P

“Cum” Laude Society, LMAO.

^ facepalm

I… I… wow. Just wow. shakes head

It varies, but my school was super unselective. I’m pretty sure that 99% of the people that applied at my school got it. There’s virtually no prestige in it anymore. My NHS coordinator is a complete joke too. We’ve done NOTHING for the club this year, and she chides us for this.

At my school you need a 3.6 weighted GPA to be invited to apply (getting a 3.6 weighted is not hard). We require 30 community service hours per year. The list of NHS members at my school seems pretty big, although I go to a big school. NHS itself doesn’t do much, but members have to do some tutoring. Student government is where the real action happens.

Lmao. Thx for pointing that out.
