Since NHS will be the bulk of my volunteer work, is there a way to write an essay about it that's not clich

If you want my opinion, don't focus on NHS...as just about everyone is a member. And I mean everyone.
Volunteering gave you those life lessons, not being a NHS member.

nhs is a joke. so are 99% of essays on volunteering as well.

Don't write about volunteering. Your EC portion will speak for itself. Write about YOU personally, not your achievements. They know those already.

I say if you really want to do it, you need to be very careful with your tone. Don't focus on sacrifices, or just make yourself seem like the nicest applicant ever. Don't use adjectives like "amazing" "life-changing" or "touching."

Be blunt about your preconceived notions, acknowledge stereotypes about NHS and volunteering (and how you bought into them.) Don't talk straight to the reader though! Mention the interest and creative types of volunteering you can see yourself doing in the future. Your message, especially since it is so basic, can't be delivered by something that feels like a college application essay- it has to feel like you.

hope that helps!
