National Latin Exams - Worth Their Weight in Gold?

Hello Everyone.

I was just wondering how colleges view National Latin Exam awards. Does it matter that having them is rarer than say being a National Merit Scholar, or do colleges say a national test is a national test?

They’re probably rarer because a LOT less people take the NLE than the PSAT. I got a gold last year, and I do it as a challenge. I’m not sure how colleges view it, but it’s probably a nice thing to have.

Thanks for your reply! I have three golds, but I did not know if they meant anything special.

I think it’s worth taking the national exam for any language. My school offers Spanish, French, and Latin. It’s completely possible for some students to take the class and somehow still get a passable grade and not really learn anything.

The national exams allow colleges to see if a student is actually gaining progress in a foreign language. So if you have three gold medals then that means you are dedicated to Latin and know your material which is very good! You are applying the things you learned and showing that you’ve mastered it. That’s one of the reasons they do the exams.

I wish I could do the National German Exam but it looks like I don’t qualify since I’m taking the course as DE.
