National Merit/Achievement Scholarship Question

just because the reviews of that model point out it’s not great for lefties (apparently the cooling fans are on the left side and you can’t have your hand there, haha).

What does that mean exactly? This may be a non-problem. I’m a righty and my right hand doesn’t sit or lay on the right side of my laptop (so irrelevant if a fan were there). When typing, my hands are over the keyboard. And, when I’m using the “touch mouse”, my right hand isn’t in an area that would “bother” a fan if it were on the right side. My hand is then hovering over the mouse. It’s not on a “side”.

It sounds like whoever wrote that review wrote about a “non-issue.” And, if really was an issue, it wouldn’t likely be in this year’s new models.

Well, I decided to contact Dell to find out the truth about that review of the Dell Latitude E6510. It’s not true. The fans are not in a location that presents a problem for lefties.

My gut told me that it wasn’t true simply because of the ergonomics of hand placement when using a laptop, but I thought I check with the Dell Latitude people to make sure.

Found the review …and how misleading it is…

*With the furnishing and configuration of the connections, **both left and right-handers can be happy. **

We can nevertheless imagine that lefties won’t be entirely pleased when using an **external **mouse due to the placement of the ventilation opening. *

the review is talking about if you use an EXTERNAL mouse, and you use it immediately to left of the laptop, you’ll feel the warm air from the fan.

But, most people don’t use EXTERNAL mouses with laptops…AND…if you choose to, then use either a cordless one that wouldn’t be used close to the left side…or if you use a corded one (not popular anymore), then keep the mouse lower or more “away” on the table.

Anyway…it’s a non-issue.

Well, I guess I’m not most people, since I’m at the moment using my left hand for an external USB mouse connected to a netbook, haha. Oh well. Certainly not a deal breaker. My techie brother (who goes to Auburn) is advising me on the college computer business now, which is always fun.

I did email Dr. Sharpe and he very helpfully contacted those in charge of the laptop business, but the only info they gave was it’s a Dell “running the latest Microsoft OS” and it comes with Office (which incidentally I don’t use… but hey, if it’s free I guess I’ll take it!). So I guess we really won’t know much until that letter after all.

Well, I guess I’m not most people, since I’m at the moment using my left hand for an external USB mouse connected to a netbook, haha.

:)

The exhaust site is on the upper left side of the laptop (way up top - near the hinge), so having your mouse in that location certainly isn’t necessary nor really comfortable. People tend to have their mouse in the more “lower” area of the side that they use their mouse.

or get a cordless mouse for even greater flexibility. :)
