Does anybody have statistics or a general idea on how many National Merit finalists are admitted to U of Michigan every year? I'm just curious I guess; wanted to get a feel for the makeup of the student body.

see p. 2:

Haha, you rock. You guys never cease to amaze me with what you find so quickly.

How much money does UMich give for finalists?

Well, i got $0. This confuses me because 71 nat'l merit finalists get in each year, (not all to LSA) and they give out 70 LSA scholarships that are entirely merit-based and yet I still did not get one. I was top 1% and had tons of EC's and a good SAT too, so I really don't know what they look at. This is making me a little confused/mad.

I've heard that the application essays have a lot to do with it. Of course, it might be just a rumor - no one seems to know exactly how these scholarships work.

One person had to be left out :-(

Haha, well they obviously don't base it sheerly on Nat'l merit status, so I'm sure more than one got left out, but I know tons of finalists with zero to minimal EC's and I definitely had a ton so there's something else going on here.

I got like a $1,500 scholarship, with 0 EFC... not sure if that was because of NMF or not. Not attending though, so chibears, maybe it'll get passed on to you?

Thanks gracil, I was actually wondering if that was a possibility? Hey alexandre, maybe you could answer that. If a scholarship is extended to someone but they turn it down, does the scholarship go to someone else or do they just not give it? If they give it to someone else, how do they determine who it is and when would they notify people?
