National Merit Letter

do we have to do anything to be entered for semifinalist?

no, not if you meet the requirements... which i don't know, but if you're a US citizen and a "regular" high school student, you're fine....

Michigan is 209 or 211 or something.

I got a 199 and live in PA, do I have any chance of anything? I thought the cutoff for anything was way higher..

gloaming: unless you are in the 99th percentile, your state does not matter. (top 0.5% of each state are semifinalists).

Cutoff for Commended students is usually around 200, from what i hear, so you could get that... this is a national cutoff, not by state...

You and me are in the same boat.. we might get it. Let's hope the national average on this test sucked :-P

heheh. i'm guessing it doesn't suck, it seems like people are prepping more and more. however, i didn't study at all, wasn't even familiar with the test format, so let's hope lots of people did what i did : )

Well, from what I hear from other people and other posts, this years test/curve was pretty tough so its possible that the cutoff for Commended will be 199 (the "normal level" for it is 199-200 anyways so).

It is definitely possible for you to get Commended.

:)

damn if i lived in colorado... i'd be semi... lol *206 GRR

Yes, but when you put Semi-Finalist or Finalist from "Colorado", it won't look as good as, say, from MA, or RI. Its all relative.

:)

So, it sounds like everyone is getting these at school, not by mail at home. Is that right? The marginal people would appreciate it if you would post the lowest score you know of that actually got one so far!

Yes, its all at school.

Lowest I know of: 205

Why do you have to be a US citizen? My friend got 230 or something equally hot, but has only Chinese citizenship..kind of sucks for her.

Got it in the mail today. Strange that some are going through schools, some mailed home.

US citizen or permanent resident. It's almost always like that.

Just curious- what is lowest commended score out there?

Last year the national cutoff for commended was 201; year before 200.

I was in the 98th percentile (207) and I still haven't gotten anything yet. Am I supposed to have gotten a letter? Also, is it possible to still win some of the corporate scholarships even if I don't make semi-finalist (I live in South Carolina)?

It seems like the schools are giving them out, not directlly to your mailbox.

can i get anything for a 207?

definetely commended.
