national merit scholarship on top of other merit scholarship?

Hi,

I've been awarded the Rush Rhees Scholarship for $20,000/yr. I'm also a national merit finalist. I remember reading somewhere that Rochester awards $17,000/yr for national merit. Would I only be given one of these two or would they be stacked so I'd be given $37,000/yr? Thanks for any help.

No–you get one major scholarship, along with your NM. D got the exact same offer for her 4 yrs.

I believe they offer at least 17K if you are a NM winner. You made out OK, since you got 20K.

My son was awarded an additional $2,000 on top of the $20,000 Rush Rhees for a total of $22,000 a year. I believe once he put Rochester as his first choice for the NMSC this happened.

Ok. Thanks.

I also know of a case of stacking an extra $2,000 NMF award on top of a scholarship from Rochester. I’m not sure if they always do it though, and I think you have to name UR your #1 with Nat’l Merit by the deadline (later this month I think?) in order to get that $2,000.

The NM scholarship is the $2000. It carries lots of prestige, but is not a big chunk of change. What NM gets you is interest from the colleges, who will sweeten the pot (like UR does) to attract NM winners.

MADad - are you saying the $2,000 is from NMSC? The $2,000 I’m talking about is a four year renewable scholarship from UR, not the one time $2,500 that NMSC gives out. It was stacked on top of the scholarship amount UR had already awarded. And was a much appreciated decent chunk of change!!

Pinot—
When you mentioned the 2K, I thought you were talking about the NM award. BTW, the NM money is also renewable, as it comes from UR, not from NMSC. UR is a school that chooses to award the NM money itself.

I thought you either get the one time $2500 from NMSC or $1000 per year from UR.

No–D received the $2500 all 4 yrs at UR
