No letter, but my daughter was sent email that the website has her decision available. She found an admission note in addition to a full tuition offer based on NMF standing.

anyone here know anything about the civic engagement program (100 hours) that you have to participate in?

bumping thread… NMSF are starting to be announced, and there are senior families are looking for schools with good merit $ for NMF.

This thread is from 2010, but my understanding is there were similar NMF scholarships in 2011.

Per Northeastern website…looks like same again for 2012 hs grads…

I’m entering my second year at Northeastern, and I am on a NM scholarship.
I recall that the process was really confusing, but here’s what I can remember about useful details:

When they say you “may” be eligible for the NM scholarship, it essentially means that unless you really screwed up somewhere else, you’re going to get the scholarship. For something like the trustee scholarship, on the other hand, the chances of getting it are essentially minute. Getting the scholarship was confirmed when my acceptance was posted online.

Northeastern will not combine a NM scholarship with something like the Dean’s scholarship. It’s one or the other. If you get something from NM (I was offered $2,000), Northeastern took that and subtracted that from what they provided. In other words, I still had a full tuition scholarship, but it was listed a little strangely on the bill. Other outside scholarships, however, will not affect your NM award.

As for Honors, I recall that if you receive the NM scholarship, you are in the Honors program; it comes with the territory. This is not the case with any of the other scholarships I know of.

I didn’t know about the Civic Engagement Program (CEP) until I got the scholarship, but it’s actually really good. Any student with a full tuition/full ride scholarship is part of this program. You have to do 100 hours of community service each year to keep your scholarship. They get you set up with a partner organization that you work with for the year. I got to do work at Brigham and Women’s hospital. I got to do something I was interested in, and it will look awesome on applications/resumes.

When I was looking for schools, I had a really tough time finding a complete list of schools that offered NM scholarships. I looked at Northeastern because it offered this scholarship; if they didn’t have it, I would be at the University of Minnesota. The scholarship is spectacular, the school is spectacular.

If anyone has any other NM questions, I’ve been through this, so let me know!

What are the GPA requirements for keeping the Natl Merit scholarship each year?

mb, A student must keep their GPA 3.00 or above to keep the NMF scholarship. My son just began his second year at Northeastern on the NMF scholarship and he loves it.

Was anyone here awarded financial aid based on need in addition to their NMF Scholarship?

BN - My guess is that you’d need EFC below $15k/yr (room/board/etc) to get FA on top of NMF Scholarship. Most colleges don’t “stack” scholarships and need-based aid. Hmm… perhaps there would be loans available.

I was offered subsidized and unsubsidized direct loans in addition to my NM scholarship. They also offered me work study until some of my outside scholarships came in and covered some of the costs.
