National Merit Semi-finalist!!

I didn't prepare much at all except for rifling through the little booklet they gave me at counseling when I signed up. I got a 229. My principal called me in today and I thought I was in so much trouble...but it's all good :) Best way to prepare is work hard in your English and Math classes.

Is anyone here from New Jersey and know that they're a semi-finalist?

it really sucks that NJ has such high cutoffs...grrr. i should have studied for them PSATs

but then again, if i lived anywhere but nj, ma, md, de or ct, i would have made it. yeahh shows you how close i was. one more question right!!!!!!! regrets regrets.

My d just found out she is a semi-finalist. Selection index score of 219 in TX.

Big increase for Texas - it was 216 the past two years. Wow.

So now we can look forward to those in power extolling the success of NCLB? Awk....I don't think I can take it. And from TX no less. AWK

No, Firelyscout, you misread. Obsessed Dad's daughter made it with a 219. He didn't say the cutoff index in Texas WAS 219. In fact, its probably at least two points lower. Relax.

MA's cutoff is 223 this year!* Phewwww, I have a 224. :)

*GC told me

Someone said that the Texas cutoff is 217 which is an increase of a point from 2005...MA's cutoff also went up by 1...and the commended cutoff increased also...

dumb question: if the cut off is 217 and you have a 217...are you commended or semifinalist?

semifinalist

I didn't say Texas' index was 217. I said it might be 217. It could be anywhere from 213-219. It might even stay at 216.

By the way, if Maryland's index is 223, that should also mean Washington D.C.'s is also 223 and Massachusetts' is probably 223 as well. Don't be too concerned. These indeces have remained at steady at 222 throughout the years and were bound to go up.

What's interesting is what will happen to states that increased a lot last year. I have a feeling some may go down. Remember, Hawaii's index is at the most a 214 this year. That's down two points from last year's 216.

I really wish I had studied for the PSAT now. I went in there not knowing what to expect at all. I wasted time reading the freaking directions. If the SAT was the PSAT, I would have gotten a 234 too...

Never mind. I guess Texas' is really 217. However, that doesn't really matter since I'm not from Texas.

That is a HUGE Increase and DISCOURAGEMENT for TExans! :(

It shouldn't really be discouraging for Texans. It means we're scoring better overall as a state. And it could be worse (see D.C.).

No one from here (Alabama) has heard much about Semi-finalist status.

yeah, school doesn't start here for two weeks, so i guess i'll find out then...

My score was nothing to brag about, a 220.

I live in WA too and I got a 220! That means I'm a semifinalist too???!!

My school is retarded so I probably won't find out officially til like november or something...they are SOOOO SLOOOOOOWWWW...

tkm...I thought I was in a ton of trouble, too, since I got called into the head honcho's office. My heart was beating so fast I could barely concentrate on the quiz I had to finish. The sad thing is that I hadn't even done anything wrong recently. I'm from Indiana, and my total was 220 :) Congrats to everyone else!!!
