National student leadership conference. Is it worth it?

I received an email about the national student leadership conference and it said that I’m selected to represent my high school because of my “academic achievements.” They sent it to me through college board and I’m not sure if it’s actually a prestigious invitation or if it’s something that is sent to everyone. What do you guys think?

My DD also received one. I wonder if you get one based on your PSAT selection index? Her SI was 217.

In brief research about it, I think this is more about them making money than impressing any colleges. But if you go, it will probably be enjoyable. (Keep in mind that they charge you a lot of money for the “honor”.)

They don’t have access to your scores. They send these out freely. College Board sells mailing list information and they may have access to some information from your profile. The invitation isn’t really an honor.

However, the program itself is probably good. Don’t think about whether it will “look good” on an application. Go if the program itself seems interesting to you and puts you on campus or area you wanted to visit anyway.

DS went to NSLC in summer of 2014 as rising junior. He participated in the medical/healthcare program at Harvard.
He had done other medical programs previous to that and felt it was good on many levels - meeting students from all over the country and world - seeing what Harvard had to offer (their medical museum/library). Now looking back, it was a bit of a whirlwind with them keeping you busy seemingly 24/7, always on a schedule, sometimes with non-medical activities. For the average student who hasn’t experienced a lot in their desired field of study, it is a great program. But again, we can only speak for that specific Harvard medical program.

NSLC is totally worth it. I questioned it a lot too. I went the summer of 2015 as a rising senior. It was honestly the greatest, most life changing experiences I’ve ever had. I did the journalism program though I’m not sure that’s the right name. It might seem like too much money but think of it as an investment for a better future. You learn so much through the program and the people you meet as well. I met some of my closest friends there. It’s seriously worth it.

Any google search will show its a scam. The accounts saying it is worth it are all new memebrs with only one post.

My DS is going to apply but it’s not on the top of our list. He’s interested in Georgia Tech and one of the conferences is there.

Yes if you wanna have fun no if you want something really good to put on your college apps
