Is the National Student Leadership Conference worth it? My D has gotten a lot of email for this program and others like it. I'm just not sure it is worth the money. She didn't apply for it. The cost is like 2k. Thanks

My kids have been invited to NSLC and someting similar with "Congressional" in its name.

My cousin's kid attended one of them about 2 years ago. (Sorry, can't remember which one.) She said it wasn't worth it. "Just a bunch of spoiled, rowdy, smart, rich kids trying to have fun instead of learn something." She said she couldn't wait for it to end, mainly due to the kids' behavior.

Thanks. That is what I thought. We will not be sending her.

Ok now...I went to CSLC, which is a different program but the same concept.

I had an amazing time, and I learned a LOT. I made some amazing friends that I still talk to almost a full year later.

DougBetsy...a lot of the time, I've noticed that the kids who don't have a good time are the ones who expect it to count a lot for college admissions (I'll be straight with you, it doesn't).

You're SUPPOSED to go to those programs to have a good time...and honestly, don't you learn more when you're having a good time?

Now there are going to be a couple kids like the ones you mentioned in every group, and maybe your cousin's kid just got a bad group of kids. But the programs I went to (CSLC and NYLC...I had a better time at CSLC, but that's just me) were not a waste of money. And I know at least 17 other kids I can get in touch with and have them email you who would tell you the same thing. attitude makes a big difference. Remember that. If you go thinking you won't have fun, you won't have fun. If you go thinking it's just going to be "a bunch of spoiled, rowdy, smart, rich kids trying to have fun instead of learn something", that's what you'll experience.

Well, it's certainly worthwhile to hear an opinion from more than one person, HGFM. And I wholeheartedly agree about attitude. Your comments provide another perspective and will carry the same amount of weight with me as my cousin's.

I got the invite also, I plan on doing the International Business program at Fordham. I feel that I am going to do this instead of others becuase it is something that i am interested in.

NSLC is discussed MANY time EVERY year, do a search and you'll find lots of threads discussing whether people thought it was worthwhile or not. While it is expensive, some kids do seem to like it and get some exposure to a field that they're interested in. The main thing that bugs me about the program is that they try to make it appear exclusive and an important activity for college admissions, which it is not.
