I recently got an invitation to the National Youth Leadership Forum On Medicine and I was just wondering if it's something that's worth paying $2,000 to attend. We can certainly afford to pay for that, but I don't want to waste that kind of money if it really isn't worth it.

i went to the 2004 session and it was a good experience, but i honestly don't think that its worth the 2 grand plus airfare (I went to Georgetown) the most interseting that i did was disect a cadaver, but thats about it... hope this helps!

My D went, it was fun socially and interesting but not worth all the money. It did make her decide to not go to med school but pursue PT. It will not help on your college app but does show that you spend your summers constructively. Her favorite part was visiting NICU .

My son was also invited to attend this program. After doing some investigating, we turned it down. Instead, he spent four weeks this summer in a program called "Research in the Biological Sciences" at the University of Chicago. He earned 6.6 credits, got a reference from the instructor both for Chicago and other schools and had a close hand look at one university that he had an interest in. The program was well worth the money.

If you want summer programs, I would recommend doing some research on this site and the itnernet as a whole. Does he want to do bio and/or medcine? There are a lot of opportunities out there.....some will even pay you, such as the research internship at Baylor. U Conn has a great two-week research mentorship that costs little more than the Leadership forum. Programs like these are worth a lot more than the latter. It's just that the Forum does a lot of slick marketing. BTW, I have also spoken with a friend who is a doctor, researcher, and med school faculty member. He has mixed feelings about the Leadership Forum.
