National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine

Has anyone attended National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine..it's for high school students.

How was the experience?

waste of money and time.

How do you even know?

I know some students who attended. Most enjoyed their experiences--some locations were better than others. If I remember correctly, the ones who attended Emory got more "hands on" than the ones who went to one in CA. That said, it really is an expensive camp. I don't think it carries any weight whatsoever as an EC or honor. Basically if you can afford, you can go.

If you are truly interested in medicine, you would probably get more benefit from volunteering in hospital, shadowing a dr., working towards your CNA or EMT.

b/c i attended it two yrs ago

and the post above is correct, it has no weight and if thats what you're looking for then, again, waste of time and money. you can much better experiences doing other things without paying more than a thousand for it

William and Mary has a program for science oriented kids called something like "Chancellor's Program" or "Chancellor's Academy". You have to apply with grades and recommendations but it is subsidized, so it is not as expensive as NYLFM. My son did it a couple of years ago and liked it a lot.

i wanted to do something like that too.

it's a waste of money and time....i was sitting there like...do you guys think im stupid or something...

Spinner: can you link me to that? I can't seem to find it.

Aspen D:...

Here is the link:

http://www.wm.edu/wmca/

I just went to the Wm and Mary website and searched chancellor academy.

Maybe Aspen D needed something else.

My son had had AP Bio before he went and he seemed to like it. He is a science major in college.

Thanks a lot for the link.

It basically touched on topics not delving into them. I learned much more doing an internship. I felt htat the speakers were mediocre and heard better at college campuses in the area.

Aspen D:
What classes were you in?
My son did emerging diseases and I don't know what else. I think he had Sharon Broadwater, the director of the program.
He was only there for 3 weeks but it confirmed his interest in science. I guess that was the most important thing he got out of it.
