Has anyone done the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine? If yes, did it help you? Thanks!

I attended NYLF Med in Arizona this past June. I had a blast. I can bet you that people will come on here and bash it because it is not prestigious. That's because that is somewhat true. As long as you are willing to pay, you can go. It says that you need a 3.3 minimum GPA, well my roommate had a 2.9 or something like that. But he had other circumstances they might have taken into account. Nevertheless, it was a great experience and I loved it. It gives you a good inside look into some things in the medical field that you wouldn't be able to have normally. Some of my friends there saw surgery and deliveries. You also listen to guest speakers almost everyday. lol. Some were great, like Dr. Neil Shulman of Emory University and the Gesundheit! Institute, others were less than good. haha. The most beneficial aspect of NYLF, however, is that it simulates what a college environment might be like for the first time for many students. I had a blast with my roommate and other people I met there and we still talk as much as we can (ah, the memories/stories I could tell). So remember, if you are doing this because you think that it will make you look amazing on paper, don't do it. If you're doing it for the experience, go for it. I was choosing to do NYLF or go to something closer to home which cost about the same price and chose NYLF to experience something new. It gave me more motivation to go into medicine and made some people give up the idea entirely. So it helped in that sense. Also, like I said it won't help as being something prestigious, like RSI or TASP would, but it helps nonetheless. My interviewer for a BS/MD program asked several questions that I was able to tie in different aspects of what I had done at NYLF to set myself apart from the other applicants. So it gave me something to talk about besides my other EC's.

PM me if you have any other questions on it. :)
