My D was nominated. She has 3.9gpa. I'm hoping this will be a great experience for her. I am trying to find out as much about this as I can. She has registered to attend for 10 days. I would appreciate any info on this.

My biology teacher told us about this program, and then he said he would put his nomination sheet at the front of the room, and anyone that was interested could sign up. So my guess is that is isn't very selective, but that doesn't make it bad. I signed up to nominate myself, but I don't think I'll be going since I've already made other plans.

ok so i went to nylf a couple of years ago in boston and it was a really great experience. i already knew that i was going to pursue a career in the medical field so this was just a little thing i did to see if i could find out anything else. i got to learn about some of the issues doctors face on an everyday basis and gained more insight on different career paths i could take. there are some amazing kids that attend and most of them are high achievers. i mean it is a great experience but it isnt anything life or death if your child does not go. feel free to ask me anymore specific questions (probably did a horrible job explaining sorry!) or pm me :-)

I swear, I've gotten so many of those freaking summer program things that it's starting to annoy me.... However, my govt teacher said to put it on our resumes cus you do need to be nominated to get them. idk how selective they really are.

Pretty much if you have decent grades (As and Bs) you will get "nominated". My cousin went, and he said it was a pretty good experience, but he said that if someone has a choice to do something else with their summer...something that is a lot cheaper (NYLF is like over $2000!) then I would go for that other opportunity. It could be another job, internship, volunteering, mentoring, taking classes, etc. However, if you have the money, and you would really like to go, then go for it. It definitely won't hurt you in any way.

I got the letter today, and it is written like it is from some very famous MD, and now I feel like it's deceptive, and insulting to the intelligence of the 'top achieving students of the world' that they are trying to attract.

um, lots and lots of people in the top 10% of my school go, and I've heard from them...about half say, great experience, love it, would do anything to do it again, learned a lot, etc (probably would say that about everything though)...the other half is more neutral (at my school, you can't hate anything that costs over 2k)

One girl told me, "It was like, um, really good. You just have to make sure that you're like lucky or whatever, because like part of my group got to actually watch like real surgery happen, and like my group just like watched surgeries on VHS. and then they like cancelled our like famous doctors too! But yeah, I loved it was great!"

^ that's her advice, I forgot which one she went to this summer)

My daughter went just now (July/2008). She went to the one in Chicago and had a great time. She participated in auptopsy and visited the morge of 2 hospitals and had actual real medical experiences. She had access to things that a regular person would not be allowed to, not even in an internship. I hope this helps....I think the cost it's not that bad, concidering a vacation (non-educational one) costs about the same, maybe just a little less.
