National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine

Does anyone know about this program/done it before? I just got a letter in the mail saying I was nominated for it because of my PSAT score, and I looked it up, and I’m definitely interested. Anyone know if it would be a good experience?

Thanks!

I wouldn't recommend it, supposedly a scam. I got in for the law forum.

It's not a scam, it is a legitimate program. My only problem with it is that the marketing makes it sound like it is an "honor" to be "nominated" for this "opportunity", when all they do is buy a mailing list.

I agree with fireflyscout. It's not a scam. Some students go and enjoy it and learn a great deal. It is not, however, an honor. The company seems to send info to any student who signs up for the PSAT or SAT and indicates ian interest in a medicine-related field. Attendance will not impress top colleges. If that program would be a financial stretch for your family, it would not be worth it to apply.

Very expensive!!!! Most B students are nominated, It is worthwhile and fun, informative but if money is an issue I would pass. It will not help you get into college but it did help my D decide she did not want to go to med school but to become a physical therapist. She has stayed in touch with friends she met from all over the country and this was from 2 years ago.

hmm very informative. thanks!

My son went last summer. His invitation stated the teacher at his school who recommended him (and she HAD recommended him), so it wasn't a mailing list thing. He found it very informative and learned a lot. They "shadow" doctors among other things, including observing surgery a couple of times (my son loved the open heart surgery). It allowed him to be sure he wanted to go to med school. I don't know that it is an honor, but it is nice to be sure you want to do something before you spend 4 years preparing to do it.

don't go!!! i went last summer at San Diego State and all we did was go to tourist attractions. I learned more about where to shop and hang out in socal than about medicine. a total waste of money that could've been spent for other things. learn from my mistake, nslc is not worth a single penny.

nylf is not nslc

My daughter went to nylf for medicine last summer. It helped her to decide that she really did want to become a doctor. Also when she applied to college, she wrote an essay about ethics issues that were discussed at the forum. She also got a feel of what it is like to go away to college - she hated the food! Lastly she met alot of nice kids that she still keeps in touch with. I agree that the honor part is no big deal.
