Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine Legit?

So I got this letter from National Youth Leadership Forum (summer 2013) and George Mason University. Is it legit? Do any of you go to any of them? The price is like $2,650 and I don't want to make my parents unless it is worth it. It said a couple of students from my school did it in the summer of 2008. I am going to check with the office tommorow and see if they actually went to my school.

And if I am going it'll be the San Francisco.

depends on what you mean by “worth it.” I don’t think these things are particularly selective/impressive. Don’t they just mail anyone who scores above some number on the SAT?

Yeah IMO these things are basically expensive summer camps for students interested in becoming doctors. You hang out on a college campus with like-minded students, attend some lectures, see a cadaver lab, etc. The “couselors” or whatever they’re called are usually current medical students who are between their 1st and 2nd years (several of my classmates did this during that summer for some extra cash). This is not something that you will put on your CV or in any other way use to contribute to your credentials for medicine, so in that sense it is useless. Just something interesting and fun to do for a week during the summer.

I received the same thing. Not quite sure what to think of it. I don’t think it could be “bad” by any means. You could still put it on an undergrad admission right?

Sure, you can put it on your application just like any other enrichment experience your parents pay for you to have.

Is it considered a meaningful activity by college admissions? Not really.

I believe they are legitimate, but I, personally, wouldn’t do it. I’ve never attended one of these, but it is very expensive and seems to mail out several letters to people both interested in and apathetic towards medicine.
