National Youth Science Camp

I didn't know where to post this thread....

But has anyone heard of it?

I just got selected, and I'm pretty excited, but I'm wondering if I should really go.

Comments, responses, etc appreciated.

I went last summer! GO TO IT!!!! It will be the best experience of your life! 100 of the best science students in the country and everyone is super nice! Plus, its totally free! What better way to spend your summer! I can't even begin to describe how amazing it is.... you'll do awesome science stuff, have great lecturers, and you'll go camping, hiking, rock climbing, etc and do theatre, music, and art activities too. Plus, you get to spend time in Washington D.C. and go to a senator luncheon which was really really cool. I talk to all my NYSC friends all the time still! By the end of camp we all wished that NYSC was our college and we could spend 4 yrs together... seriously, its incredible!!!!!! PM me if you have any questions and I can tell you all about it!

Oh, and everyone calls the staff members 'staph' because their enthusiasm is so infectious. lol. You'll have an awesome time! GO GO GO!!! And congrats on being picked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, this won't help too much on college application.

Yeah, maybe not but not everything is about college applications. This will be on of the best experiences of the OP's life... it's incredible

Hey Kaitlin,

Thanks for your input! I really appreciate it! I just confirmed my decision to go and I can't wait until June.

By the way, what college do you go to?
Any tips on how to make this trip the best as possible?

Thanks again

Right now I'm at my state university because I got a scholarship. However, I'm hoping to transfer to USC next year! What about you? Do you know where you are going? I'm so glad you're going to NYSC!!!! You will have such an awesome time! As far as making the trip the best possible, take an extra blanket because some nights got kind of chilly. If you play an instrument make sure to take it because after dinner every night different delegates have the chance to perform. You might also want to take suplies if you have have a hobby such as juggling, jewlery making, painting etc because at the end of camp delegates get to lead seminars on whatever they want so you could teach everyone else something. If you've done a science fair project you might want to make a powerpoint and take it with you because theres a chance for you to present that if you want too. If you take some money there's a camp store where you can buy NYSC clothing, snacks, cameras, phone cards (your cell phone won't work in the woods because its in the no radio wave zone or something for the Green Bank telescope), shampoo, etc. Plus, in Washington D.C. you'll want to buy stuff. All your meals are paid for but souveneirs are extra. There are also a few other occasions that are surprises so I'm not going to say anything ,but you may want some spending money for those things as well! Make sure to take a few really nice outfits and a buisness suit too. Oh, don't forget rain gear! I'd invest in a rain jacket (not just a poncho like I had...) because it gets wet and we got soaked one day when we were hiking and I was still wet when I went to bed in my tent. Thats the one thing I wish I'd taken. Well, have a great time! A few of my friends are 'staph' this summer and they are awesome so I know you'll love it!
