Native&Black chances (EA)

Heyyy everyone i’m just curious to see my chances for early action in the fall.
I’m black and native
3.72 UW g.pa, 4.1 W
32 ACT retaking in sep& oct to try to get 34
I reside in Wa state
top 20 in U.S steeplechase, top 25 800m
I started the speech& debate club, and am the president. I’m VP for Youth Leading change club, involved in key club, and math team starting in the fall. I have countless hours of volunteering at a retirement home, and hella different races, I am a state medalist in the 400m. numerous track awards, and student/athlete of the month, a bunch of leadership awards& activity nominations. numerous science based awards including MESA regional champ, and 4th in state in their educational program building contest. hmmm… lots of other stuff but that’s too much typing lol, my essay should be fire because I am going to talk about how I went from a 1.8 in middleschool, likely drop out to applying the fundamentals of track and field to build the premise of myself as a whole, and my contribution towards the community and students in need. finally, I personally tutor at risk African americans, as well as my fellow native americans on Fridays because I do not want them to go down the same path I had been going down in the past. anything helps! thank you! (disregard all the typing errors, I typed this rather quickly)

whoops, forgot to mention I am also an intern at the hospital in the pharmacy dept. and I was granted my pharmacy tech license by the Washington Dept of health.

whoops once again, I forgot to mention I have hella IB classes under my belt as well,

Lets take everything else out of the mix for a moment. If you are in the top 25 HS 800m runners in the United States (1:52?) and have a 32 ACT and a 3.7 uw GPA, your chances are quite good.

Have you read Gibby’s sticky on chance threads? If not, do so. You are trying to swim in a big pond. Based on the title you chose for this thread, you seem to think that your ethnicity will be the biggest driver for your application. It will not be. Your recs will be huge, and we cannot know what those all be like. Neither can we fathom your personal statement. Nor do we know why you are aiming at Harvard, besides the overobvious brand name. And being overobvious is not a good thing. So based on your post no one can chance you beyond the customary 5% or so. If you end up being a recruited athlete that will have nothing to do with your ethnicity or your ECs.

Obviously you never know, but if I were a betting man I’d put my money on you getting in to a top ivy

Your GPA may be bit low by comparison to other URM’s in the SCEA pool, therefore you might stand a good chance of being deferred, so that admissions can compare you to a larger group of URM’s in the RD round. Don’t believe me? See Harold Ekeh’s stats: http://nypost.com/2015/04/05/meet-the-student-accepted-into-all-eight-ivy-league-schools/

Or, how about: http://www.theshadowleague.com/articles/black-and-ivy-league-accepted-so-what

That said, you should read through this entire thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/1420290-chance-threads-please-read-before-posting-one-p1.html

Get recruited

Ayy lmao

^^^ That might indeed be the answer. @pharaohrunner800:
Have you contacted Harvard’s coaches and filled out a recruiting form?: http://www.gocrimson.com/information/recruiting/recruiting%20forms
Have you registered with the NCAA?: https://professionals.collegeboard.com/guidance/prepare/athletes/clearinghouse

@gibby hmmm, yea I had that feeling as well, I hear Dartmouth raves over native americans. So much so that they have a program to fly over 50 there a year all expenses paid. If not Harvard SCEA my alternative for EA would be University of Chicago. Any suggestions?

@gibby I actually have and the coach sent me the recruitment times, which wont be achievable til senior year. Brown& Dartmouths coach’s came into contact with me and showed me their minimums as well which are far more attainable this year.

@pharaohrunner800: It would seem your chances as a recruited athlete at Brown & Dartmouth are better than at Harvard. So, you need to keep pursuing the Brown & Dartmouth coaches AND contact the University of Chicago coaches. Your athletic ability, academics, and URM status will help you get in somewhere great! If you just apply as an academic URM student, you are going to have lots of competition no matter where you apply.

@gibby I think I can get in academically tho,I know of 0 Black & Natives applying to these universities, especially Harvard, or yale wjich has a disappointing 0.75% Native American enrollment

http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2015/04/harvard-college-admits-1990/

2% Native American (or Native Hawaiian – for some obscure reason Harvard lumps their stats together) translates to about 38 students. Not sure how many of them applied SCEA, how many of them are also black, and if their stats are better than yours. That’s the chance you take applying in the SCEA round as an academic applicant, as opposed to using your athletic ability, plus your academic and URM status at Brown or Dartmouth. Given your numbers – top 20 in U.S steeplechase, top 25 800m – I think you would be crazy not to pursue Brown, Dartmouth or UChicago to see if you can be admitted as an athletic recruit. You could always apply to Harvard SCEA if the coaches decline to use one of their slots in the admissions process for you.

@gibby prolly none. UChicago’s track team stats are disappointing. Idk if I’ll have time to do track collegiately cuz I’m majoring in bio so I can get into med school. Dartmouth is specifically Undergrad so I should go there&transfer to med school. Probably USC’s for sports med lol

@gibby plus Chicago doesnt disclose their EA stats, or acceptance rate so I don’t want to risk taking a shot in the dark.I’m studying the whole summer to boost my ACT to 35 to compensate my GPA , so I can almost ensure my spot @ Harvard CLASS OF 2020

The girl in our city who put she was Native American got into Princeton, Dartmouth and Cornell… those are just the ivy schools she got accepted to. I heard she had a great ACT score, but I’m not sure what it was. Apply to as many schools as you can.

Are you ranked top 25 in the 800M for the state or in the US?

@BellaVenezia thanks for the heads up girl, I’ve distinguished myself enough to get into Harvard, maybe even Stanford lol. @justonedad in the nation, 5th in state, then @ nationals I placed 25th
