Hello, I just got accepted to Northern Arizona University and I was really considering going there, until I heard the negative things people have been saying about it. It has had a pretty good impression on me and I'm going on a campus tour soon. I am majoring in Civil Engineering. (according to the university) Nau has a great engineering program. I wa also invited to the Honors program, which really surprised me because I'm a B student. I am an OOS resident, so I would be living on campus. Sooooo.... Is the investment worth it

Any thoughts or opinions about their engineering program, reputation, dorms, or whatever would be appreciated :-)

NAU is the least selective of Arizona’s three public 4-year universities. However, its civil engineering degree program is ABET-accredited, meaning it meets a (high) minimum standard of quality and fulfills that requirement for Professional Engineer licensing that is commonly useful or needed in civil engineering.

If you visit, stop in the career center and ask what companies come to recruit civil engineering interns and graduates (do this at other schools you visit). A few schools have school-specific career surveys on their web sites listing employers of recent graduates.

What other schools are you considering, and what net cost after non-loan financial aid would you be facing at each school?

I applied to Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly Pomona which are affordable because I live 30 mins away. I doubt that I’ll get into cal poly because civil engineering is impacted. On the east coast I got into St. John’s university and Hofstra ( I aimed low). Both these private schools are going to cost about 30k even after my academic scholarship, but NAU has a fixed rated of about 21k for California residents

Which region would you prefer to work in, southern California or northern Arizona? Many employers tend to recruit mostly locally.

But if you can commute to CSUF and CPP, then these would be even less expensive than NAU, right?

I am an OOS resident, so I would be living on campus. Sooooo… Is the investment worth it

You say that NAU will cost you about $21k per year. How will that get paid? Will your parents pay most/all of it? If not, then it’s not worth it.

Both Fullerton and CPP are more than adequate for CivilE. Since it sounds like you’ll get into CSUF, go there. Very good for eng’g and Calif companies know it and will hire its grads. If you get into CPP, then that’s another very good choice.

I was on CSUF’s campus this last summer. There has been a lot of remodeling, new buildings, improvements on campus.

I’m not dissing on NAU. I know little about it. It does seem to attract a good number of Calif kids, but I don’t know if that’s for STEM majors or other majors.

The problem is I have not been accepted to either Cal States and already got rejected from Cal State Long Beach. Considering it is already March and Cal Poly hasn’t even asked for my transcripts yet, I was focusing more on the schools I have already been accepted to. Nau is the cheapest of the schools I’ve been accepted to. If it got into to either Cal State, NAU would be off the table but until then…
Could someone tell me about NAU’s engineering program (Plz and TY)

When you say that you’re a B student, can you provide more insight? how are you doing in Calculus? How did you do in the harder sciences like Chem, Bio and Physics.

What are your test scores?

What is your GPA?

What are your parents saying about how much THEY will pay each year?

My GPA is 3.4 (weighted), I got a 1910 on the SAT(CR:600, M:720, W:590)
Im in APCalc AB right now, and im doing well. I took Biology and chemistry in my freshman and sophomore years. I didnt do well in either’), but i really liked Chemistry. I did not take physics, i know i should have taken it but it didn’t. I already know that my GPA isnt enough to get me into CCP or other top engineering schools , so im working with what I got

What CSU’s did you apply to besides LB, Fullerton, and CPP?

When will the Fullerton decision come out?
