I recently moved to a new school that uses naviance and I want my teacher from my old school to complete my rec letter…But this is extremely complicated because common app doesn’t allow me to invite a teacher after linking my account to naviance. i’m not sure how to submit his rec letter stuff now. Please help
Isn’t this something your GC handles? Most kids waive their rights to see the letters (which colleges expect them to do), and they are sent to the GC who loads them into Naviance or sends them to the schools.
Also, you are posting this in the UC forum. You should be aware that UCs do not require – or look at – letters of rec (with the exception of Berkeley, who will ask for them if they want to see them)
My Guidance Counselor called Naviance and they said she can’t do that. Oops I didn’t realize this was in the UC section (I’m still new to CC )
How has she handled rec letters in the past? It’s the GC’s responsibility to make sure that transcripts, mid-year reports, letters of rec and counselor recs are sent to the schools. I assumed that if schools use Naviance, it’s handled that way.
yeah but my old school doesn’t use Naviance
Your teacher or GC from your old school needs to send the rec letter(s) to the GC at your new school and then your new school’s GC can upload it.
“Here is the issue-- I thought we could upload an extra letter but I talked to Naviance and they shared that we cannot.” I talked to the common app people and they said I should invite my teacher as an “Other Recommender”
But the problem is that not all my schools require other recommenders…
I believe that the Common App lets you customize what you submit for each school. That way, you can include school-specific requirements or additional info (e.g., some schools will allow you to submit additional rec letters, resumés, etc.).
Otherwise, there is a printable PDF version of the teacher rec that you can give to the teacher along with addressed, stamped envelopes for all of your schools. (That’s how we used to do it back in the Stone Age!) There’s a section on there where you can choose to waive your rights to see the letters; you’ll want to do that.
This is from the Common App teacher rec PDF:
“After completing all the relevant questions below, give this form to a teacher who has taught you an academic subject (for example, English, foreign language, math, science, or social studies). If applying via mail, please also give that teacher stamped envelopes addressed to each institution that requires a Teacher Evaluation.”
We were in a similar situation with our son this year. We moved to a new state prior to his senior year, and his new school used Naviance (his old school didn’t). He wanted to use teachers from his old school for his recommendations. His GC at his new school said he couldn’t use Naviance to invite those old teachers to do the recommendations. She had us contact each college he was applying to, explain the situation, and see if he could have his old teachers email the recommendations directly to the school. All of his schools said that would be totally fine, and each one gave us an email address and very easy submission instructions which we forwarded to his old teachers. The teachers had no problem submitting the recommendations. Hope that helps!
Thank you so so much!
