NC State Admissions Student Intern- Available for Questions

Hello everyone! My name is Sharon and I will be graduating from NC State this May with a degree in Social Work. I have had an amazing experience as a student at NC State and would love to answer any questions you may have about the NC State student experience. Please feel free to post any questions you may have about NC State in general or any specific questions you may have. Go Pack!

Hi Sharon,

My son is very interested in going to NC State for Computer Science. He is a Junior in High School. I have two questions. He is from out of state. Is there a certain percentage that they take from in state? He is also interested in taking the summer engineering program for computer programming. (week long program) Do you know if they take from in state first for that program? We thought that would be a great way for him to experience the campus. Do you have any advice on how to make him more competitive on his application? From what I am reading it seems likes it’s getting harder to get in to the school.

Thanks so much…

Sharon, any timing yet on when Design School acceptance might be sent?

Hi Sharon!

I’m a poli sci major, and I was talking to an ambassador about my housing situation. Do you think North Resident hall would be ideal for someone who is in CHASS? Also, I reallllly liked avent ferry dorms, but im concerned about the proximity. The other ambassador on here was saying he has never been there… have you?

Thanks :)

mjkcarolina4,

I’ll chime in about North Hall, if I may. My daughter is a sophomore in the College of Design (also on the East end of campus), and she loves North Hall. She was in Bowen Hall her freshman year, and it was just “okay” for her. She much prefers being closer to COD, closer to Hillsborough St., closer to Cameron Village shopping center, and not so boxed in by other dorms and campus buildings. The rooms are larger (than Tri-Towers) and each have their own bathroom. The features that others cite as negatives carry no weight with her. She doesn’t use the gym, has a light meal plan (she’s not trekking to dining halls for every meal), and doesn’t see the “remote” location as a negative.

Contrast that with her roommate from last year, a high school friend. She chose Bragaw for this year, and she loves her choice too. But she’s a Biology major, frequents dining halls (right behind Bragaw), and likes being in the mix on campus. She also likes picking up the Wolfline stop right in front of Bragaw.

It all comes done to what you prefer, and the trade-offs you’re willing to make. Good luck!!

Hi Sharon~thanks for offering to answer some questions here. Rumor has it NCSU has chosen to significantly reduce the size of its incoming engineering school class. Is that so? And why? Any ideas? I understand a new engineering library was recently completed so find the timing interesting.

Hello: Our son was accepted on January 25th. We confirmed his acceptance the other day. He just received an invitation to participate in the START Program. Sounds like a summer school program that helps orient new students while they earn credit hours.

Does every new student receive this invitation?

Thanks

Madoug,

Any questions regarding the College of Design would best be answered by the folks at the College of Design specifically. Here is the link to their website design.ncsu.edu[/url”>http://design.ncsu.edu/]design.ncsu.edu for more information.

North Hall is directly across Hillsborough Street from Tompkins, Caldwell, and Winston Halls, which house a large number of CHASS classes and offices. For that reason I think it makes a great residence hall for CHASS majors. Avent Ferry is also a great residence hall, and NC State has a great bus system that can easily get you around campus. Similar to what klinger said, you have two great options so now you just have to decide what is best for you.

I’m glad to hear your son has an interest in NC State! The admissions office does not evaluate applications from out of state students any differently than in state students. I would recommend that your son check out this website [Admissions :: Profile: Am I Competitive? - Freshman](<a href=“NC State University”>NC State University) to get a better idea of what they are looking for from their applicants. As for the summer engineering program, I am not very familiar with the program and recommend that you contact the College of Engineering pre-college advisors at [About Us, The Engineering Place (K-20 Outreach), College of Engineering, North Carolina State University](http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/theengineeringplace/about/index.php).

dowzerw,

I really appreciate you bringing that rumor to our attention, but I have not heard anything about a class size reduction. I would keep an eye on the NC State Undergraduate Admissions website admissions.ncsu.edu for any official news. Go pack!

SCNYE26, when the OOS limits are factored are they by major, school, or entire university basis?

I am an out of state transfer student and I am taking two classes that I need to be admitted currently (English and calc) I am applying to the business school and I am worried that the OOS spots will be full by the time the admissions office gets my current grades. I applied in early January. Also are chances very slim if I get deferred?
