NC State Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

Congratulations to your DD. Daughter was Deferred at NCSU for Aerospace Engineering, but; accepted to the University of Miami’s, Aerospace Engineering Program with Full Tuition and Books! She’s Still trying to decide on the Best fit for her Aerospace Engineering Studies…

Last year it was not until March around the time they released RD decisions and for OOS do not expect much.

The number actually enrolled at NCSU gets lower for OOS because most OOS end up with much better merit and need offers everywhere else except maybe Clemson.

For D21, when we had all financial aid offers in last April, NC State would have been more than an Ivy she was accepted to and UMiami. She ended up at another state flagship OOS with a full ride.

That’s a sad commentary on NC State’s efforts (or lack thereof)to attract quality OOS students (unless you’re one of the 40 OOS Park scholars). But I guess if people are willing to pay or take out loans they don’t have a reason to care.

NC State can’t even accommodate their strong in-state applicants…

It is not 40 OOS Park Scholars…last year:

11 OOS and 29 Instate

The focus is clearly instate which is ok, but they should be more transparent with it.

BTW, love NC State and think it is a great school. If we still lived in NC our kids may have been there. I just wish they had a better funded endowment and honors program.

Where did she end up and what degree program? We’re out of state and while NCSU is one of the most affordable out of state programs it’s still a lot of money really. Our state schools go from great merit to no merit. I attended and graduated NCSU as an instate student. Didn’t know how good I had it

Ouch. I thought 1/2 was allocated to OOS.
Only 11 OOS? That’s crazy.

Agreed. Good school.

But, as you said, there isn’t much transparency about what, if any scholarships or aid, is actually available to out-of-state students.

My husband went to grad school at NC state and it was in the top tier of her list based on her criteria at the time.

UNH ended up having a very specific engineering program that was of interest and she ended up with a great department level scholarship offer after their initial merit scholarship had helped bring it into range.

When NC State finally pushed out the financial aid packages it looked ridiculous compared to the other offers. I think it was a total of $3400 in merit (and student loans, work study, etc…) OOS this year is $42000 for Tuition, Room, and board. $46,000 estimated all in. With predicted increases we figured it could be close to $50,000 by her 4th year. It was hard to think about spending $180,000 for NC State - not including how much we would have spent at Chargrill

For those who do go the NC State make sure to visit Chargrill often! https://www.chargrillusa.com/

I was afraid of that. I’m guessing we’ll get a token $1000 or $2000 scholarship. But based on EFC from the FAFSA, we “should” get aid. But do they just do loans?

What is your EFA in FAFSA?

NC State does not state they meet full need without loans. Their financial aid package will show any merit or scholarships along with student loans, parent plus loans, work study if eligible, Pell if eligible, etc…)

This page lists most of the colleges that say they meet full need based on their formulas.
Some include student loans and some do not. Many still incorporate parent plus loans even if they state no student loans. And most families need parent plus loans just to pull together the EFC never mind the balance of need. Here's Every College That Offers 100% Financial Aid

Experienced NC State parents - are there any negatives to waiting until late March/April to commit? Specifically, we’re concerned about housing choices - is it first come first served? We can’t get there to visit until the end of March and my DD is concerned about missing opportunities.

Accepted: College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (Biochemistry)
GPA: 3.95 (UW) / 4.6 (W)
SAT: not submitted
Rank: n/a
State Residency: Maryland

You might be better off asking this question over on the State Reddit page.

I would join the FB parents group and ask the question there, but my recollection for this past admissions cycle (my D was deciding between NC State & VT, and we took it down to the wire) was that housing was completely randomly assigned, so it didn’t matter when the student committed. They could pick their roommate but not dorm or location. They were also required to live in NC State dorms as freshmen, as opposed to being able to choose to live in University Towers, which was an option in previous years.

You can apply for housing in mid-Feb without committing to the college. That holds a spot for you and can withdraw later if choosing another school. It is NOT first come first serve, but you don’t want to be one of the last people signing up. They start assigning students behind the scenes even though the portal closes on June 1. Assignments are finalized and sent in early July. Recommend looking at the living-learning villages as they have good programs, and getting in will guarantee placement in a specific dorm. Otherwise, unless things have changed, you can’t pick a specific dorm, location, or style. That was rather frustrating. Congrats on the admit and good luck!!!

That’s the thing. They can still attract lots of top students without needing to give out merit. VT doesn’t give out much either, and Clemson is limited. Then you have UofSC shelling out a lot! It’s a supply and demand thing and the in-demand schools can be more stingy.

Honestly- not to offend anyone - NC State was not even on our radar or a school we had heard about like UNC until DD was nominated by her school for Park.

Of course, we’ve learned it’s a great school. But there are other great schools in the same league as State. So I’m not sure about that OOS $46k+ price tag - if no merit or grants. I know some will pay it…just not us

NC State is a good school for in-state, which is why it is so popular for kids around here. If I didn’t like in NC, NC State would be in the same category as Penn State is now for my son- good school but worth $47500/year? Meh.
