Trying to help a friend. His son graduated grade 11 in Quebec and is coming to an Ontario prep school where he will redo grade 11 and grade 12 (he is playing hockey with my son in Ontario).
So from NCAA I academic eligibility starts from Grade 9…and counts 4 years…9,10,11,12…my understanding is by repeating his grade 11 (which is not repeating same courses)…he counts his 9,10,11 from Quebec and then 11 from Ontario…so is all these courses qualify (assume they do)…what happens with his grade 12…?
My friend does not want to pay a paid consultant (they charge quite a bit)…
THanks…if any Quebec parent has dealt with this…if he stayed in Quebec he would have done 2 years CEGEP instead of repeating grade 11 and 12.
Will he have all required courses in those first 4 years? If so, no problem. It’s okay to have more qualifying classes than the NCAA requires. I think the NCAA only requires 3 years of English or social studies, but many have 4 or 5 full year courses in those subjects. MANY hockey players do a post grad year in US boarding schools so it’s not unusual for hockey coaches to deal with it. I think any coach can help work through the NCAA requirements.
I am assuming that we are talking course eligibility and not GPA eligibility. And since this is a general question, I will not delete. But as a rule, asking for a friend posts are not allowed.
In general, the first four years of HS will be the ones that “count.” So the 16 core courses should be completed before the student starts grade 12. The one exception is English, where the NCAA gets a bit funny about repeated courses, even if they are not strictly repeated. So English 11 at the new school will likely not count, but English 12 taken the fifth year will.
More courses than required is not an issue.
4 years of English required
Thanks. I actually told my friend to take a grade 12 english in his repeat grade 11 so I actually was right!
The concern was the extra year of school…i.e. essentially a grade 13 (or equivalent of graduating CEGEP).
I appreciate the feedback…there is a lot of “pressure” to hire counselors in Canada who feel intimidated by the process. I also want to understand the process myself since I have heard similar cases through the years.
The extra year of school is not an issue. Many students who start BS repeat a year without issue. And if course all PGs are on their fifth year.
Yes that is correct. As long as 15 of 16 NCAA required Core Courses are done after four years in high school, taking a fifth year is perfectly normal.
The NCAA Core Courses can be looked up on their website.
