NCF or UF (Philosophy Major)

Hi there,

I am not sure which of the two colleges has a better Philosophy program.

Worth noting: I could careless about how contrasting the social scenes are from NCF to UF. I am only interested in which school is more beneficial academically and with getting me into a great Grad School for Philosophy.

Should I go to New College of Florida or University of Florida?

You’re kidding, I hope.
As a philosophy major, you are coming to an area were 95 %
of the respondents are pro-UFL enthusiasts and you are seriously
asking which school is better suited for you to study philosophy,
UFL or USF? I guess you didn’t think this one out too well!

Where did you see in my post “USF.”

Thanks for the response, ■■■■■■.

Protip: Don’t be a philosophy major. You’ll make even less than Psychology Majors (29k average), and you actually probably will only be offered restaurant jobs.

Get a minor in philosophy if you really want, a major in journalism so you can actually get a job. If you major in philosophy, you’ll feel what many angry college students are saying, “I can’t get a job out of college.” Well, no s*** you can’t get a job out of college. You majored in something that doesn’t have any demand. No one in this day and age is going to pay you to sit around and write your thoughts down on a piece of paper. Save yourself a lot of time and misery, change your major.

That being said, I would think the New College of Florida would have a good one…they’re pretty hippie dippie.

Honestly, you should go to NCF.

I say this because we don’t need a potty mouth in the superior UF.
I’ve taken philosophy here, one of Aristotle’s virtues suggest that one should try to make friends for ethics. Clearly, your insult is contrary to this virtue, so by reasoning (see what I did there), you will not be happy in life. Ever.
So philosophy is good for you, just remember, when I ask for fries, I want the large.

Never mess with a gator. We’ll chomp you up.

Not many helpful responses to the OP. sorry about that. Its hard to compare the two schools, as they are so different in their scope and mission. UF is a research school with over 18,000 grad students. The name recognition and respect from going to a school like UF will likely be higher, but a school like NCF focuses on undergrad education will provide a different experience.

While UF’s program is ranked, the rankings in Philosophy for NCF are unavailable, due to departmental rankings being done on the graduate level and NCF not having graduate philosophy degrees.

Best of luck in deciding, and sorry it’s so hard to compare the two.

The UF Phil courses I took weren’t that hard, and a couple of the Professors aren’t *******s.

I wouldn’t major in Philosophy unless you plan on becoming a lawyer though. I started out in Philosophy at UF. Aside from not being that interesting for me, it’s just not very useful afterwards (unless you want to go to Law School, then it’s great). Major in something cool and useful like linguistics.

Either way, if you decide to stick with Philosophy then I’d go to UF simply for name recognition. I am not a grad school admissions counselor, but I’d imagine an applicant from UF with good grades is more appealing than someone from NCF.
