NCS, OU, or OSU for zoology major?

I live in AR right now just taking my basics... But Im almost done and I need to decide which college is better to go to for a Zoology major. Personal issues set aside...does anyone know which school would give me more opportunities in the zoology field?

Which OU and OSU are you considering? There are three of each.

You don’t need an undergraduate degree in zoology to go into zoology. That said, Michigan State has the best program, followed closely by Oregon State, Oklahoma, NC State, and Ohio State, in roughly that order. The programs at Ohio U and Miami U are decent but not as strong.

Since you’re in Arkansas, of course look at biology at U Arkansas, which has a good ecology track within the major. For a very strong zoology program close to home, also consider Auburn.

OSU stillwater is the one with the zoology program…and thanks for the advice hippo2718. Ive looked into the uof Arkansas…but all they have is a biology degree…with emphasis on zoology. Im just not sure if that would have the same impact as an actual zoology degree.

If you’ll be needing financial aid, don’t apply to any these out-of-state (OOS) publics, because they can’t give non-residents the aid they need to pay for the high OOS tuition, or room and board…

However if you can afford the full non-resident cost of attendance for these schools (about $34k - 40k per year, depending on the OOS school.)

Is cost an issue? If not then, you’ll have many choices. :)

The NC State website list non-resident’s cost of attendance for 2009-2010 at $29,788.

That number includes $2,850 for personal expenses and travel costs plus $950 for books which seems high. My NCSU grad. never spent that much on books.

OOS tution and fees at NCSU is $18,000 per yr.
Dorm fee is close to $5000
Meal plan is listed as over $3000 but that is the most expensive “all you can eat” plan.

I forgot about NC State’s COA when I wrote that range. Thanks…

However…$950 a year for books is not high. Were you thinking per semester?

I have 2 kids in college now, and each semester costs about $400-600 in books.

Actually, each class costs anywhere from $80-200 in books - especially engineering, math, science, and foreign language classes. If a student takes 4-5 classes a semester (8-10 per year), then books would easily cost $950/yr.

So…OOS publics that the OP and others have recommended range from $30k - 40k. If the OP needs financial aid then OOS publics aren’t the way to go. Does NC State meet need of non-residents?
