I feel okay about the December SAT; I could have done a lot better, especially on math (expecting a 500). I do feel that I did well on the Reading and Writing sections, however, so hopefully they will make up for a low math score. I’ll probably retake the test in January; hopefully, I won’t be sick when I do the test then!

NCSSM only looks at Critical Reading and Math scores, that’s what one of the NCSSM representatives said at our NCSSM interest meeting at our school.

Hey guys I know I have been idle on this thread for a while, but I was wondering how I should study over winter break for the SAT’s (I am taking the January test). I was thinking a practice test every other day? Any advice??

I’m a sophomore in the Triad region and I just found out my SAT score today. I got a 1920 :’(
Can anybody tell me how competitive District 6 is and the average SAT score for my area?
I am terribly worried about my SAT score.

@hsstudent86
I responded to your other post but… check your schools average SAT. They compare your score to your school as opposed to your county or district or the state as a whole.

@sillystring
I’m also CD4, so I don’t want to give too much help :p, but your plan doesn’t sound bad. Just study what you got wrong, what the right answer was, and WHY you got it wrong. And maybe do vocab flashcards or something, I know a lot of people who try that. Don’t know their scores, but there are only so many places and so many of us who want them.

Best of luck to both of you

@Yehrs52
The December scores are out, by the way. Enjoy.

Alright, recently I have been navigating the admissions process for the North Carolina School of Science and Math. At first, I was very confident, but after looking at some of the other applicants on Google I am much more skeptical. Could you all please gauge my chances, tell me if you think I have a shot ( By the way, I will live in CD 10 as of January 2013.)*

Don’t know why it made the frowny face…

@GIndividual
I’m in the same boat as you as far as feeling confident, then not so much.
As you’ve read, they compare your SAT score with your school’s graduating seniors’ averages.
A lot of these applications you see, though, are from CD4 and CD(8/9, Charlotte area), the two most competitive(CD4, I’m sorry to say, is the most competitive >10% acceptance rate from here). You’re only competing with CD10 students, so it’ll depend. You look, in my unprofessional opinion, to have a strong application. Keep in mind though, I’ve just been looking around, same as you. The political service and participation looks especially impressive.

@SeeTheDawn
I think you meant o put a less than sign instead of a greater than. And I thought that CD4 was the most competitive.

I see that everyone has so much cool things on their application. Mine is just boring :(

@SeeTheDawn-Yeah, most of the applications I’ve seen are from CDs 4 and 9, and it does make me feel a bit better to be in a less competitive district. Still, I know some pretty well qualified people who are applying so…fingers crossed! (Best of luck in CD 4, I’m sure everything will go well for you :D)

@Yerhs52
Sorry, yeah, <10%. I wasn’t paying attention Thanks. And sorry I wasn’t clear, I meant that CD4 was indeed the most competitive.

@ GIndividual
I hope so! Best of luck to you too. Everyone needs it, no matter the district xD

Hey so I’m applying this year and I’m extremely nervous. I think that everything I’m doing may not be enough compared to all the miniature geniuses I’ve seen applying. I just really hope that I get this opportunity to be around such amazing applicants and I hope to have yall as my classmates in a few months. Although I do not know any of you I pray that you’ll be accepted and I’ll be asking you “What’s our homework?” haha.
But I have a few questions for those who already are going there or have?
How high is a good enough SAT score to get it??
What are the admissions people really looking for?
What is school life like? Dating? Friendships? Roommates?
I read in some places that the social life is bad, is that true? Is there large amounts of homework? Or is it more in class work that leaves you mind boggled at 1 am? How often do you get to go out to near by places? How would you describe your experience there?
And my fellow nervous applicants…
How do you feel about this? Are you nervous too? If you get accepted and I get accepted please message me I would love to get to know you earlier so we can have a friend on the first day. I want to try and know everyone there if I’m accepted. (:

@futurencssmer
I wish the same for you! Though I hope that we don’t both end up unaware of the homework.
I haven’t gone and am not attending, but I’ve read some blogs and talked to the siblings of former attendees. I talked to some students(mostly just one) in person a bit. I was asking more about the school than admissions, though. I’ve read LOTS of blogs from students and comments from former students, so I hope I can answer your question.
I hear, and mind the disclaimer that a lot of what I say is repeating what I’ve found online, that you want 100 points higher than the average for your high school’s seniors from last year. If you’re homeschooled or your school didn’t release the data, you want to compare yourself to your city and/or county.
The admissions people are looking for your application
I hear people are really close, but you also lose weak friendships from home, or as I heard it put “You find out who your true friends are”. There’s dating… well, look at this thread for some more information thereaways:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-chances/1281692-ncssm-junior-giving-help.html
Maybe send him/her a message if you have more questions.
I hear there’s a bunch of out-of-class studying and homework, however smart you think you are(Not you specifically, I’m totally in that minimal-studying boat) But lots of people participate in intramural sports and stuff. No travel time to and from school and all.

Sometimes, I feel confident like a lunatic. I feel like I’m going to get in, that I’m meant to go to the school, I just need to apply, and it’ll happen.
And sometimes, I feel like an ant trying to kill an elephant.
I’m cautious, so I’m just going to take my best shot at it. No use looking back and thinking that I could’ve done better, right?
If we do, I totally will, assuming we’re both still active on here.
Sorry for the long post

@futurencssmer I am so nervous as well. I am afraid I do not have the qualities that other applicants have My chances of getting in are very slim to be quite honest, since I am from CD 4. So I definitely feel ya ahaha. And I will message you in the unlikely event that I am accepted :)

And to all of you on this thread, I genuinely wish you all the best All of you are really creative, intelligent individuals and strong applicants for NCSSM. I hope all of us are accepted aha Good luck and happy new year everyone!

Also, I am from CD 4 (I shuttered as I typed that lol), and I am taking the SAT at the end of this month. What should be my goal scores for each section on the SAT?
Thanks.
Also, anyone remember that LutherSetzer guy? What happened to all of his posts? :P

Look at your high school average and aim to be about 100 points higher is what I hear.
No idea about LutherSetzer. I never saw his posts, just the responses to them and ones that referenced them.

Hello! Feels weird to jump into the conversation now that it’s already January… I’m from CD12. I just finished submitting the application. I hope we all do well and get in together! Although I’m kind of nervous about my SAT score and extracurricular activities…
Do you think 1890 is okay enough to make it?

Always happy to make the party bigger. Hope you do well too!
Your SAT score is compared to your school’s graduating seniors for the class of 2012. They say you should try to hit 100 points higher than that average, so… a number by itself is not as helpful as a score and your average compared to your school. That’s a decent score, in general, though! You can see your school’s averages in your more detailed score report from collegebord. It’s under your score, the first option.

@futurencssmer I think almost everyone feels nervous, but it is important to make sure you are confident.
