I am interested in Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering and am trying to decide between Stanford and Notre Dame. I love the atmosphere of Notre Dame, but it is hard to pass up the Academics of Stanford.
Does anyone have experience with the Aeronautics and Astronautics (Eng) major ar Stanford? or the Aerospace Eng program at ND?
Thanks in advance for any help!!

(I will also post this in the Stanford forum)

Both schools are probably similar in their atmospheres, though Stanford is in a nicer area. I'm not a huge Stanfuurd fan myself (go bears!), but they do have one of the best engineering departments in the world, and it's more renowned than ND's dept. Then again, it's also probably more competitive.

i agree with vc08 that stanford is more renowned for this area, i think that you must consider different aspects

i certainly do not think the atmosphere of stanford is anywhere close to ND's.

in the end, i think you have to determine what is more important to you:

the slightly better reputation that stanford has in the area (after all, both schools are extremely well-known and can get you to the top of your area- in this case engineering)

or ND, where you will have an all-around experience, not just the academic education (ND's education also includes spirituality so if that's important or you don't want anything to do with that, it may be key in your decision)

Wow you have the choice between the two best schools in the nation in my oppinion. Both are not too big not to small, amazing academics, and spirited athletics. You can't go wrong.

smcsmc- I am having a similar problem...I fell in love with ND and was completely set on it, then got accepted to Duke. As a premed student I have to consider Duke because it has such a great reputation in this area. However, the more I think about it I think not going to ND is something I would regret and wonder about my whole life. For me, it looks like ND next fall. It is truly a unique place, has excellent academics, and will prepare me well for life. Good luck with your decision and hope to see you at ND, although I'm sure you will be successful wherever you decide to go!

My son is having a similar problem he is interested in Physics. His head is telling him to go to UChicago which has a great Physics department, but his dream has always been ND.

kacy-
My S was deciding between ND, Duke, and several other schools a year ago. He's at ND. He hasn't had a second's worth of thinking he didn't make the correct decision.

According to USNews: Top 5 Undergraduate Programs for Aerospace/Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering are MIT, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Stanford & CalTech. Stanford is in the Top 5 for 8 of the 12 undergraduate engineering specialties; Notre Dame is not ranked in the Top 5 for any of the 12 undergraduate engineering specialties. Stanford engineering is ranked at number (2) two overall--behind MIT--Notre Dame ranked at number 43 along with Brown, Michigan State, Vanderbilt & WashUStL.

I didn't know that US News had that detailed statistics, they should probably be able to predict the weather by now.

The downside I could see at Stanford is that it has nine times as many engineering grad students as Notre Dame, which could adversely affect the academic experience. That being said Stanford probably does it well regardless of statistics. I personally didn't like the Stanford atmosphere when I visited my best friend last year, but hey to each his own.

Other than that all I can say is that Notre Dame is on a construction binge, just completed a wind tunnel and is pouring the foundation for a multipurpose engineering building

I love ND and am so excited to be going there next year - but, if I were interested in engineering, I would have to go with Stanford. It is just too good.

I know a girl in Aerospace at ND and she loves it.
It seems to be plenty challenging academically from how she describes it.
I could probably have her email you if you want.
