Nearest Grocery Store?

Does anyone know the quickest grocery store from UT by bus? If you could give the exact bus routes for the weekend, that would be great. I'd really rather there be no transfers and keep it under half an hour, but you know...whatever you can find. Also, please only short walks...for safety reasons.

Also, is it safe to ride the bus alone? And how do you know when your stop is coming up? I have NEVER ridden a bus aside from those yellow school buses.

There is an HEB southwest of campus that apparently people go to a lot. There is a specific bus (doesn’t run on weekends or something?) that will take you on a route right in front of it. I heard this in passing though, although I am too looking to make a try to a grocery store or Wal-Mart soon.

Yeah, there’s an HEB on Red River that the aptly named Red River route bus takes, although i’m not too certain of its weekend times.

my daughter shops at the HEB on REd river all the time; very convenient

Red River? The only ones I can find when I look it up on Capital Metro are: 7th St, Brodie, Brunett Rd, Central Market, E 41st St, ED Bluestein, Highway 183, N Lamar, N Mopac, Oak Hill, Research, Riverside, S Congress, S IH 35, Slaughter, Village CTR, and W Canyon Ridge. Whew, that’s quite a few…but no Red River?!

mypsych97, does your daughter shop there alone? I’m just worried about it being safe!

Central Market is a great place to shop. Very nice shopping center. I shop there regularly and it is very safe. Lots of organic choices, great fresh fruit. The HEB on Red River is at about 41st Street so that may be the stop you are looking for. And HEB tends to be the lowest priced store in town but also has a very good selection. If you call the Capital Metro route info line at (512) 474-1200 they can help you out. And I ride the bus regularly and have found it also to be safe.

Oh - and the stops are usually announced, but if you are not sure, just tell the bus driver when you get on where you are trying to go and they are usually very helpful.

Okay, that sounds promising, but I thought 41st St was northeast, not southwest? I can’t seem to find a direct route there, either.

Unfortunately Central Market is a bit too expensive!

41st Street is very central Austin. If you put in the HEB address (1000 E 41st Street) into the Capital Metro trip planner along with the address from UT where you will be starting it will tell you all your options. I know the northbound Red River bus goes that way, but there will be other options depending on where you start from on campus and the time of day you are going. Just use the trip planner.

You can also find bus routes through google maps as well if cap met isnt working for you.

Whoel Foods downtown, Wheatsville co-op, Fiesta on the otherside of 35 down Dean Keaton, Red River HEB, Central Market on Lamar

I was actually wondering if it was worth it to take a short walk to Wheatsville Co-op. Is their selection of food and price range fairly decent?

You are right to be worried about being safe at HEB. A few weeks ago, a young lady was shopping there and she was kidnapped. She blacked out, only to wake up in a hotel room in a bathtub filled with ice. On the mirror was a note to call 911. Someone had taken her kidney! Be careful shopping at HEB!

I think the address is actually on 41st St. My d does not go there alone, but with her roommate; we have eaten at Freebirds there several times–in the same lot—and it seems fairly safe and well traveled by pedestrians. I wouldn’t have too many worries.

Just a note, I don’t think that kidney story is true. [snopes.com: Kidney Theft](Kidney Theft | Snopes.com) And Red River is a route that you can take via UT bus not city metro. But I’m pretty sure the buses dont run on the weekend.

LOL ikari. I was just playing.

OP I think you need to chill out there are much more dangerous places in Austin than HEB. =/

The bus drops you off in the parking lot in front of the HEB. There is even a covered bus stop with a bench to sit on while you wait to take the bus back to campus.

You can also pick up a few things at the CVS on Guadalupe if you had to.
