NEC Contemporary Improv. Thoughts?

Hi. My son applied to NEC as a jazz clarinetist (undergrad) for the Jazz program and also for the Contemporary Improv program. He was accepted into the CI program but not in Jazz, which was his preferred choice. He likes the philosophy of the CI program, of exploring new boundaries in music, being experimental etc. But he thinks it might be “too” experimental. He wonders if he’ll get the same proficiency or mastery of his instrument as he would if he were in the Jazz program and if, after graduation, he’ll have employable skills or if he’ll be too far out there. Does anyone have first-hand knowledge of the CI program or about how kids mix and mingle among the different programs at NEC? I often see the two mentioned in the same breath (and lots of glowing reviews) but not sure how it works in practice. Any thoughts welcome. thank you.

I see noone responded. I will PM you so you can PM me.
