I am going to be a high school senior in Illinois. 4.270 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). 31 ACT score. 5 on AP US History. 4 on AP Chemistry. 5s on Micro/Macro Econ. Interested in majoring in Engineering. Looking for a medium-large school in an urban environment. Have taken all honors and AP classes in high school. I've checked out UMich and really enjoyed it. Am open to any and all suggestions.

You should get into University of Illinois- Urbana Champaign.
University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota are matches. However, I don’t see any reason to consider those publics since you have UIUC(the best engineering college in US along with UMich, MIT, Stanford, Purdue) right in your state.
You would have to be crazy to turn down UIUC (25k per year) and attend UMich by paying 50k year.

bump.
Thanks, XtremePower.

Northwestern sounds like it would fit you well, especially since you would be instate. I don’t know about the specific reputation of Northwestern’s engineering school (McCormick), but the university as a whole has a strong reputation. Illinois Institute of Technology might also be another good instate fit for you. If you want something a bit exotic, the University of Toronto has a really good engineering department. Be aware though UofT engineering is one of the toughest undergrads to get into at the university, much harder than any arts and most sciences programs offered.

Johns Hopkins has a true college campus but is in Baltimore so you have access to everything the city has to offer. You’re also on 40 minutes from D.C. I would also check out Boston U and Northeastern because you should be able to receive merit aid.

Thanks for the responses

Bump. …

I agree with XtremePower. UIUC is the school to beat for an Illinois resident with good stats who wants to major in engineering.

Have you talked to your parents about any cost constraints?
