So I'm a high school senior that has been accepted into University of California Irvine. My gpa when I applied was a 3.52 and a 1700 SAT. Even though its a miracle that I got in, this miracle might be taken away. For my second semester of high school I have been taking some challenging classes and it has caused my grade point average to drop below a 3.0. I got a C in honor physics but it is a weighted course so it will be a B. I have a C in Calculus, B in Mandarin 3, B in English 4, and B economics. If I do the math correctly I will have a 2.8 weighted.I've already been on UCI's admission website and it says applicants must keep a 3.0 weighted gpa. If I report this problem to my admissions counselor, will I automatically be rescinded or is there a chance they will be lenient? I've heard many stories of people not getting rescinded for having bad grades, but also vice versa. I also heard a rumor from my fellow classmates that I can write a letter to explain my situation to the admissions office. If this rumor is true how often do the admissions give the students a "pass". Any relevant information is appreciated.

I’m not sure what situation there is that would warrant your grades dropping below the stated minimum. Your only stated excuse is that you took challenging classes. That’s not an acceptable excuse given that colleges expect you to be taking challenging classes and that your college classes will probably be more challenging than the classes you’re taking this year.

Are we talking about semester, year, or cumulative GPA? Make sure that matches up with the requirement.

You need to contact him/her immediately. Get in front of this and you may be able to take a summer class or enter under academic probation.

And it’s not like they’re not going to find out. You have to give them your final grades no matter what.

This is just my second semester grades. My first semester gpa was a 3.2 weighted and the reason it dropped was because I started working half time after I got accepted into UC Irvine. My mom is the only person working in my family right now, so I just thought it would be easier on her if I paid for most of my college loans, tuition, etc. I’m not making any excuses for my grades dropping, but do you think the colleges will take that into consideration? The job I currently have is also paying me under the table, so will I get into any legal troubles if I told them this?

Lol at your username. GL with not getting rescinded.

My understanding…
The 3.0 GPA requirement is based on the cumulative GPA not just this last semester. You did not earn less than a C in any of your required A-G courses-did you? You should be ok. Double check with our Guidance Counselor to make sure…as I am just a Mum.

I got a C in 3 classes and all 3 of them are a-g courses. However only one of them is a required uc a-g course. The rest were just recommended because I already fulfilled the uc requirement for that area.

Your senior grades are problematic…they already let you in with your below UC Irvine average SAT score and GPA, so I feel like you should strive to prove yourself academically. And your school weights C’s? Your school is way too lenient. A 2.8 weighted, which is below a 3.0 weighted, may get you rescinded. Good luck!
