I am currently taking AP US history and AP English 3 and I'm a junior. I thinking about switching out of the ap english because I heard that colleges care only for your gpa and don't care what classes you took. So I don't know if I should switch out or not because I'm trying to maintain a 4.0 ap I can stay in the top ten of the class. Also I am trying to get into USC or Stanford.

Some colleges take your weighted gpa, and I think the ap class would look good

But if I take the ap class i might not get an A in that class

Then settle for honors. At my high school you could max out your weighted GPA @ 4.8 by doing all honors and only like 4 AP classes total. Unless you’re in desperate need of AP credit or confident you could do well, it isn’t worth the risk to a 4.0 GPA.

There is no honors English class. There’s only regular and ap

If it were me, I’d do regular. I’m sure there’s tons of overachieving CC-ers here who would say do the maximum workload, but I’m not one of them. I did get accepted to USC though without an extreme course-load. Don’t plan on getting admitted to Stanford. You can be perfectly qualified and still get rejected, which is why I say Ivies do vodoo admissions.

What was your schedule for your junior year of highschool?

If you aren’t sure you’ll pass it, then take regular. You have a pretty good schedule so regular english won’t really hurt in my opinion.

I know I can pass it but I don’t know for sure if I’m going to get an a.

It all depends on where you’re looking to go to college- some schools will expect that applicants take near the maximum difficulty as a course load, others won’t mind if you don’t have a ton of AP classes on your transcript. Stanford is one of those schools that’s going to be expecting the most from you, so I wouldn’t plan on an acceptance there…I’m not too sure about USC.

Your councilor might not check the “most difficult workload” box.

What do you mean penguin?

He means that some colleges make you take this form to your counselor with a bunch of boxes on it. One of them is how difficult was their course load. My counselor checked box 4 out of 5 for difficulty with 2 AP classes and 3 honors.

My guess is schools don’t weight these things very highly when a counselor will often “inflate” the results to give you a better chance of acceptance.

I don’t think it really matters whether you get an A or not, though. I got a B in APUSH and a 5 on the AP exam easily. I think what matters more is if you think you’ll enjoy the class.

Ask people in your school how easy/hard AP English was and how good the teachers were, if you get positive results then take it.

Are you an English/language arts oriented person? If so, I would go for the AP. GPA wise, it may not make a difference, but if you can pass the AP exam, you can save yourself time and money in your college years.

Just hardly maintaining a 4.0 gpa won’t get you into those schools. Gonna have to step it up.

I can’t believe the answers I’m reading here. Grow some balls and take AP lang
