Need advice!

I am currently a student at a decent university but I am thinking about transferring. I think the campus is really pretty but it is a little too southern for me and I feel very out of place. It is also too far away from home (10 hours) . I think part of the reason I am unhappy is because I can't find anyone that I can hang out with. I have friends but it is more of a superficial friendship because in reality we don't have that much in common. I am a member of three clubs and a sorority as well. I also want a more academic atmosphere but I am taking core classes right now but some people are struggling and I am doing well. I was miserable for the first semester and the first half of second semester. But right now I am feeling ok and I still do not like the social scene here but things feel a little bit better right now. I have already sent in my applications to transfer but there are three main things that are holding me back from leaving.

My boyfriend is coming to my current university next year and I know that that would give me a new social outlet to meet new people that I might actually like.

I have a scholarship here and my parents cannot afford the full tuition elsewhere if I transfer so I would have to take out some loans (roughly 40,000 total for the next three years)

I am terrified that I will hate the next college I go to and and will regret leaving my current school.

Please offer me any advice that you can!

Only you can decide whether it’s right for you to transfer, but I encourage you to visit all of the schools you are considering, more than once if possible. That way you will have some idea of what you’re new school will be like. I also do not recommend choosing a school for a significant other. Finally, keep in mind that it can take time to adjust and fall into place with the right group of friends, and also that friends do not necessarily make you happy at a school. I was miserable my freshman year, and though I had my group of friends, I ended up transferring anyway, and I’m much happier now.

Ultimately, it’s your decision. Good luck with whatever choice you make!

Thank you for your help!

$40,000 is a significant amount of debt, especially if you have any thoughts of going to grad school. Not necessarily a deal breaker, but it is good that you are considering it in your decision.

There are schools that offer scholarships to transfer students. I know someone who got one after transferring to our state flagship.

I already applied for a nursing scholarship but I am hoping that after I year I might be able to get a larger scholarship from whatever school I get into. I would just hate to think that I would have to stay in a place where I am not too happy just because of financial reasons, but I also do not want to be in debt for the next 20 years or so.

One option is to go to community college for your sophomore year, which would be a significant cost savings. Then you might have more options for your last two year, cost-wise.
