My son has a GPA 3.75 and a 24 ACT. Also was in a club called green power, they build cars that run on batteries and race them. My son worked all year on the new car . Up at 8 every sat and holiday, his team car won 1st nationally. Do you think he will get in. Auburn has a car that they race. My son wants to major in computer engineering or computer science. This is his dream school. I’ll die if he gets waitlisted or deferred or even rejected. Any support, advice, guidance is appreciated.
Are you asking if he will get accepted at Auburn?
Is he instate or out of state?
There are lots of schools at which he can study CS or engineering – try to help him make a complete list of schools where he’d be happy. An “X or bust” attitude sometimes just ends in sadness for the student.
Help your kid develop a longer list of desirable schools. Bad plan to focus on one school as a “dream” school.
Not enough info. What grade is this son currently in? When does he apply? If a senior in HS I suspect a bogus post.
The 24 ACT is below the average for Auburn. I would encourage him to take it again and try to get that score up. Agree with the other posters to not have a “dream school”, especially if it is an academic reach.
This is your kid’s college search…not yours. Many of us had kids who were rejected from colleges…and some from top choices. We all survived, and so did our kids.
So will yours if he doesn’t get accepted to Auburn.
He needs a list of schoolS…more than one…where he would be happy to attend, not just one dream school.
And I would strongly suggest you not get invested in any of his options until AFTER he has been accepted.
Agree with others. He needs to retake the ACT, and perhaps try the SAT.
If Auburn has applicants apply directly to engineering and computer science…this student might not get accepted to those majors.
He can consider schools that don’t require or emphasize test scores, many of which are top schools: http://fairtest.org/university/optional
The green power car extracurricular is wonderful (we have that at our local school too) but a similar racing car program is not a good criterion for college choice.
As others have said, there are many schools out there. And the “or else I’ll die” sentiment seems to cause some doubt about the post’s validity. Clearly a parent needs some detachment in this process and a kid needs many choices to avoid disappointment.
S1 is senior MechE at Auburn. Loves it.
At our OOS HS 3.75 and 24 are a likely admit for general Auburn, but engineering (includes comp sci) is a little more competitive. Check Naviance for your school. I’d consider retaking and/or take the SAT (equivalent for admissions, some do better on one than the other).
Auburn doesn’t have an engineering admit - you are admitted to the univerisyt. For engineering, you just have to successfully complete the fresjman/sophomore basic pre-engineering courses (calc & physics) and you can continue to register on an engineering track. A very upbeat place.
I would have him study for and take the ACT again until he gets closer to a 30.
