Need Advice

I'm an older student at an NJ Community College. I am looking to transfer with my associates in biology. I've already applied to some schools (Rutgers, Seton Hall and some smaller schools). But, after reading some threads, I'm considering applying other places.

Some Background Info:
I am 24, white female. My stats in high school weren't bad. 3.5 GPA, multiple varsity sports, AP's, Honors Classes, volunteer work, etc 1330 SAT out of 1600. My last year of high school, my parents found out that I was gay and basically kicked me out of the house and I've been supporting myself since I was 18. After a few years of working in the real world, I decided that I needed to further my education, so I went to community college.

Right now, I have a 3.8 GPA, Phi Theta Kappa (Honor Society), mentoring for first year students, honors classes, tutoring and honors scholar designation. I also work full time (50+ hours) as a high level manager for an ambulance company (have steadily progressed in the 3+ years I've been there). I work mainly in scheduling drivers and negotiating contracts between our clients for their transport needs. I've also been in charge of payroll and have multiple certifications including EMT, 911 dispatch, etc.

My question is, should I look at other programs and schools (preferably in the Northeast) and if so, which would I legitimately have a shot at?

Are you wanting a bachelor's in biology?

First off...I'm sorry your parents acted so dumb. Kicking you out for that is just ridiculous.

Now, as for biology...you actually have good stats to be competetive at a lot of universities. Do you not like Rutgers?

Yes, I want to get a bachelor's. I do enjoy my job, but I've advanced almost as far as I can go, and I really enjoy bio. I'm not the biggest fan of Rutgers. The campus (New Brunswick) is really large and as good of a reputation as it has, it just doesn't feel right to me, no matter how many times I visit it.

Consider Swarthmore. It's a really good school with one of the top biology programs anywhere--and they give really good financial aid (although I don't know how that works when you are still subject to your parent's FAFSA).

Hopefully your parents and you will reconcile.

Best of luck to you.

Anyone else?

you have really good stats, and you shouldnt have any trouble getting into schools. Heck, you might even be eligible for top notch schools that have good Bio programs like Johns Hopkins or Boston College.

Like others have said, try Johns Hopkins and Swarthmore. Also, I am not sure of the process, but be sure to mark yourself as an independent on the financial aid application. I know someone who was in a similar situation, and they ended up not having to pay for college. She was 22.

Anyways, you have a good shot at any college in my opinion. Best of luck to you.
