Really would appreciate your advice! UCLA is my dream school and I really don’t want to lower my chances of getting in. I keep hearing that Business Econ is very hard to get into, so I’m hoping to transfer from Undeclared (I’ve read the prerequisites).
My UC GPA is 4.35
Unweighted GPA 3.9
ACT 34
SAT Math2 780
SAT Chemistry 760
SAT US History 740
AP Chem 4
AP US History 5
AP Psych 5
AP Eng Lang 5
Tons of volunteering, jobs, and community service hours.
Should I apply to Business Econ Pre-major or undeclared ?
My advice is always select your choice major since there is no guarantee you will be able to switch into the major later after admission. You look like a competitive but no one can give you that guarantee…
Here is the information for changing majors from Undecided to Business Econ once you are admitted so if you think you can meet the following requirements to switch into the major, then you might consider applying Undecided.
It will come down to would you still be happy attending UCLA as a non Business Econ major if you are unable to switch??
For both non-transfer students to be eligible for the major, you must have completed all of the pre-major requirements with a minimum 3.0 GPA and a “C” or better in each course. Please note that your grade in the writing course is not calculated into your pre-major GPA, however, you must earn a minimum grade of “C”.
You are allowed a maximum of one course repeat in the pre-major (First grade must be C- or lower) and you can repeat that one course one time only. Repetition of more than one pre-major course or of one pre-major course more than once will result in automatic denial of admission to the major.
All pre-major and the major courses must be taken for a letter grade.
You must be in good standing at UCLA at the time you apply in order to be considered for admission. This means that you cannot be on Probation or Subject to Dismissal status.
As a non-transfer, your application will be accepted if you have completed between 72 and 135 units. (AP units will not be included if they bring your total over 135.) Applications are available via the Undergraduate Economics Moodle Website and are accepted within the first three weeks of each quarter, including Summer Session A.
If you are a freshman then what you put down for your major does not matter with regards to admission for any major in the college of letters and science. Read the freshman selection tab on the is your admissions webpage which also tells you other things you are to know when you are filling out your application.
For very popular majors you are not admitted directly into the major but instead to something they call the pre-major. Once you have completed all the prerequisites you apply for the actual major, so it makes no difference at that point whether you are listed as having the pre-major, undeclared, or any other major.
@collegefind1234, keep in mind that UCLA is known to be hard to switch majors once you have declared. Also, a school like Berkeley does not have auto admit to business school and is notoriously hard to get into. Many at Berkeley, similar at Michigan, end up as Econ majors rather than business. Emory has a great business school but also does not start freshman year. USC and WashU both have strong four year business schools (Marshall and Olin) starting freshman year.
