Need an online upper division linguistics course

Hi all,

I am currently a conditionally-classified MA TESOL student. In order to become fully classified, I need to complete an upper division introductory linguistics course with a B or better (I got a B- as an undergraduate). In order to avoid graduate fees, my graduate adviser recommends that I take an online course to fulfill this requirement.

Here is the course description of the one at my campus, which the online course must be similar to:
“An introductory course for those students who have had no previous
formal studies in modern linguistics. This course is designed to acquaint
students with the ways in which language operates, focusing on the
subareas of linguistics that are most relevant for classroom instruction.
Major topics covered in the course include phonetics, phonology,
morphology, morphophonology, and syntax. Whenever relevant, language
acquisition and social patterns of language use will also be discussed.”

Does anyone know of an online intro to linguistics class like this that I can take this summer or fall (hopefully relatively inexpensively)? I have been struggling a lot to find one, so I figured I would ask here.

Drew

I’m sorry for the late reply (I just saw this post). Winston-Salem State University’s graduate program in The Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL)/Applied Linguistics should be offering online courses soon (if not within the next semester or so). West Virginia University’s Linguistics division (inside the English department) may offer online classes, I’m not certain.

Is the introductory course you need also of an undergrad classification? If so, any introductory course (i.e., presuming no former knowledge of the subject) is unlikely to also be upper-division (junior/senior level).
