Need Clarification: UCSB TAG

I fill be applying to transfer our of a California city college this upcoming fall semester (Fall 2011). My current GPA is 3.0 and I have classes this summer that I will most likely receive A's in. My GPA will jump too 3.17

My question is: Since TAG for UCSB states that a 3.2 is required, do Fall 2011 grades get included? I know that the submission of the application is required before the semester even ends.

Another Question: Are all UC-transferable courses counted into the calculation of the UC-GPA? Are any excluded? what about the courses that says UC-Transfer Limit.

Last Question: Is an essay required even when TAG-ing to a UC?

Thank you for your help guys!

no essay is required, your ASSIST CERTIFIED COURSES is the GPA that the UC’s take, not the OVERALL.

i believe you need the 3.2 BY the time you transfer. going to go research now, i’d like to know myself for UCI/UCD

What are assist certified courses? I know how to use assist to check pre-major classes but how do I check if the other course are “assist certified”?

Thanks for the reply! :)

via my tag MY COURSEWORK section:

What are the requirements to submit a fall 2012 UC Davis TAG?

Fall 2012 minimum requirements for a TAG must be completed by the end of summer 2011, one year prior to your planned fall 2012 enrollment at UC Davis:

30 UC-transferable semester (45 quarter) units

3.20 - 3.30 overall GPA (dependent upon major)

**- meet UC Davis selective major course group GPA requirements for courses completed at the time the TAG is submitted. **

im sure UCSB is the same.

I dont know about davis. But UCSB’s page said " Earn an overall minimum 3.20 GPA in all UC transferable course work by the end of fall 2011;" with end of fall underlined…

Dark91 how many units are you taking during the fall?

Don’t forget to add some easy A’s, if needed, just to guarantee yourself in the 3.2 range, then you should be fine.

I’m thinking of taking it easy and doing 12 units in the fall. I’m planning on 7 “easy A” units and a 5 unique calculus class… if I put in the effort I can most likely pull an A, at worst a B. But my gpa will still be a high 3.2. I just don’t know if fall grades count…

If your first choice is UCSB, then you could apply regularly where fall grades would apply and TAG elsewhere.

but I would be TAGing w/o the GPA. because fall ends after the application deadline. Does this not matter?

Thanks

If you don’t have the minimum gpa for the TAG by the time you apply for it you shouldn’t be too worried, just apply regularly where you’re fall grades will be taken into consideration along with your higher gpa. So just beast those classes because you want to show UCSB your upward trend gpa wise. Since we can only TAG to one school now, it will definitely help you because there won’t be a as many applicants compared to last year Tagging to all participating UC’s, which made regular admissions more difficult and competitive for a lot of students last year.

I could use some clarification, too.

When entering the courses I’ve taken, do I only list the UC-transferable ones? or do I put down every class I’ve taken? E.g., I took Intermediate Algebra in Fall 2010, but the course – Math 80 – doesn’t come up when I go to add a new one. So do I just hit the “my course isn’t listed here” button? or does it not matter?

“I dont know about davis. But UCSB’s page said " Earn an overall minimum 3.20 GPA in all UC transferable course work by the end of fall 2011;” with end of fall underlined…"

then why did you ask?

@briceies I would just hit the “my course isn’t listed” because if you search the threads on here many people have had their admission revoked or had to explain to admissions why they didn’t list the courses that they took in the past, so it would save you a lot of hassle to just use the “my course isn’t listed” for the classes that do not show up.

@screename1

thanks. I wasn’t sure if it would hurt my transferable GPA, but I don’t think it does, so yeah.

I’m literally in the same exact situation as you. My UC transferable course GPA is 3.18, what I think is you can apply for the tag and after you complete your fall semester they will send you a letter asking for your transcripts in maybe you’ll get in if you’ve bumped up or maintain a 3.2?? (Not sure, this is my guess I would email them or ask my counselor if I wanted a more reliable answer).

I have a friend who applied to CSULB and instead of receiving an acceptance letter she received a letter from them in April asking for her transcripts then in May sent her a letter telling her she got accepted. So this may be the case?

Hey kittychen!

How sure are you that UCSB only counts assist-certified courses? Did you experience it? I need more insight… b/c I am applying for UCSB TAG but I have foreign coursework from outside the US too… I was wondering whether ONLY the courses from CA community college will be counted into the UC GPA since those are assist-certified and guaranteed as UC transferable?

^^ it depends if the foreign classes you took are considered equivalent or not. Sometimes, the UC might even consider it because they might not even up to their standards
