I've been accepted to Pomona College, Middebury College, and Swarthmore College, but I don't know which one to choose. If I was describing a dream college it would be: environmentally conscious, athletic (pretty good in sports), beautiful campus, excellent English program, great study abroad opportunities, friendly community, intellectually stimulating, dance scene, poetry scene, and great food. Can anyone give me insight about any of these colleges to help make my decision?

Based on what you wrote middlebury then Pomona

costs-to-you?

I would agree that Middlebury, then Pomona, seems best.

I would say Pomona, it is not as strong in the athletic department but you can’t beat the food. Five campuses all within walking distance and all have good food!

I have a friend whose D does ballroom dance at Pomona and loves it.

I’ve visited both Middlebury and Pomona and I had great experiences at both. I’m just very indecisive. I think my attraction to Pomona is also due to it’s proximity to a city, LA. For me, a con of middlebury was that te nearest city was Burlington, which is an hour away. With that said, I still love so many other things about Midd.

Your initial post was a perfect description of Middlebury.

It was also a pretty damn good description of Pomona (the only thing among what you say that I don’t know about is how poetry is featured on campus- I don’t know about it too well here). Swarthmore a little less so, but I think you can to some extent find all the qualities you’re looking for. They all seem to provide what you want so I think it’d be prudent to visit the schools and start considering some other factors.

Pomona is offering me $3000 more than Middlebury. More info: I will be an English major and probably Enviro. Sci. minor.

Well for Middlebury and Pomona, environmental science works the same way- a common core + a concentration. You should study the descriptions and see if their tracks fit what you like.

About English- at least at Pomona, please do look through the website. We used to have a major where English majors could take any 8 classes in English electives without much plan or thought, but the English department is planning some significant changes about the major.

Never mind- it is actually set in stone. You can see a concrete outline of it here:

Pomona and Midd clearly seem better fits than Swarthmore. Location more than anything else is the dramatic defining difference between these 2. Small town pretty rural Vt vs southern Cal sunshine and LA accessibility - where would you rather spend 4 years?

Don’t forget Claremont is also a small charming town Best of both worlds

Middlebury has the Breadloaf school of English and Writers Conference. It also has the oldest (and one of the best) Environmental Studies program in the nation.
