so I've been accepted to UT-Austin and UNC-Chapel Hill and absolutely CANNOT decide between the two. Both have pros and cons and I've kind of just jotted down a list of stuff about each and I just want people's opinions on where I should go.
Oh and I live in the Houston area (so native Texan) and am going to major in biology and be pre-med (although I don't know where I want to go to med school) and also 100% want to be in a sorority. I've also visited/toured both schools and they are probably going to cost around the same amount.

UNC
-I would be kinda terrified to go there because I'm out-of-state and wouldn't know a single person there
-I felt somewhat like a foreigner when I visited/not like home because 82% of students are from North Carolina
-Greek life didn't feel large enough for me (it's very laidback there)
-Perfect size (20,000 undergrads)
-Good sports but not good football (which is super important for a Texas native)
- Great people/everyone is super friendly/there's a lot of super hot guys :)
-Amazing campus/absolutely gorgeous
-Chapel Hill is cute and an adorable college town but I feel like I would get bored/run out of nightlife activities/plus there weren't any major malls/clothing stores
-have a lot of suite-style dorms which makes it easier to meet a lot of people
-great school spirit
-good academics but low med school acceptance rates (10-15% according to a biology professor)
-amazing weather and it actually snows during the winter (it rarely snows in SE Texas so its a big deal to me)
-it's sooooo far away from home/can't come home for most breaks and plane tickets are expensive
-didn't seem like enough of a party atmosphere (I like crazy college parties lol)
-would get a more traditional college experience

UT
-could be excited to go there
-good academics/I could easily handle the courseload
-way too big/overwhelming student size (40,000 undergrads)
-nothing beats Austin nightlife/always something to do
-awesome parties
-campus is way too urban for me/not enough fields or quads
-huge Greek life/so much fun although some of the people are a bit shallow (and frankly kinda stupid)
-would actually know quite a few people who already go there and will go there/ that's a more comfortable feeling
-awesome sports and football (although they've done horribly this year)
-only 3 hours from home/close enough and far enough from home
-great school spirit
-not big on pre-med (not known for premed at all; known for engineering, cs, business, and communications)/they don't post med school acceptance rates so their probably not too great/no medical school in Austin
-a lot of hot guys but they're somewhat hard to find bc of such huge diversity
-some dorms are really nice and I applied pretty early for housing so I probably could get into a good one
-I've grown up always hearing about UT so it can get kind of sickening/annoying

Basically, I want UNC's campus and students but UT's nightlife (Austin), location to home, and major Greek scene...Help please!

My opinion? UNC. From what I’ve heard, UNC students NEVER run out of things to do. They know how to party. Plus, you’ll be surrounded by so many other schools that it’s basically a haven for college students. Chapel Hill was voted the number one college town for a reason… I can’t imagine that you’d ever be bored. There are over 20,000 kids at that school, plus thousands and thousands of students from other colleges in the area-- you’ll get a real college experience, and that many college kids in one area? They’ll party hard.

Also, I know it’s scary starting over at a new place, but you will be with tons of other freshman who are also at a new place. Granted, 88% of them would be from the state, but I read that UNC is great at getting out of state students well-adjusted. Plus, chances are that your roommate will be from North Carolina, which means it’ll be possible that she’ll already know people, and then there’s your connection for meeting tons of new people.

That said, distance is an issue. I go to school about 4 hours from my house, so it’s enough to drive home when I want… but honestly, I never go on a random weekend. I only go for breaks. There’s not enough time to go back otherwise… and this is coming from someone who expected to be so homesick. There will be so much going on campus that you might not want to leave.

The most important part is fit, though. If you toured and said you didn’t feel comfortable there, that’s a pretty big issue. I picked a college that I didn’t feel comfortable at when I toured, and now I want to transfer. But from what I’ve heard and read, UNC students are VERY welcoming to out of state students, especially since you’ll be unique and different and they’ll know you must be smart to have gotten in. The south is a friendly place, but keep asking around and try to get a contact from someone who actually attends UNC to get his or her perspective.

First of all congratulations, you have two excellent choices. I would give UNC the slight academic edge, Austin seems to be a better fit culturally for you. You can’t make a wrong choice.

I will say this though. At UNC you will have access to taking classes at Duke, which for me would push UNC over the top, especially if you are pre-med.

Your pros and cons, scored on a one (low) to five (high) scale of your apparent enthusiasm:

UT average = 3.9

Just from glancing over your list, it sounded as if you were trying to talk yourself into UT.

^^ I agree. That list kind of convinced me that UT-Austin was the choice for you. But you really HAVE to feel comfortable with whatever college you choose. Where do YOU picture YOURself? We really can’t tell you that. I know it’s hard, but it’s important that you do what’s right for you. Also, which school ended up being more affordable for you?

well the thing about both schools is that basically whatever con one has, is a pro for the other and vice versa (so I really wish I could merge the two schools together! lol). But I keep going back and forth like five times everyday, which is why it’s driving me crazy.

As for finances, I haven’t heard back from UNC (but they have rather good aid there) and at UT my aid is about 3,000 in unsubsidized student loan and 9,000 parent loan per semester :/

Oh and when I said that I didn’t feel comfortable at UNC, I meant that I wasn’t comfortable with the idea of 82% being from NC and basically no one from texas. Sorry for the confusion lol I actually loved UNC when I visited (but I also love UT) which is why I’m at such a big standstill :/
