University of Texas at Austin or University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill....which would you rather go to?

Chapel Hill - A third the size, and more of a classic college town. It’s a better quality of life as far as I’m concerned.

Agree with gadad, but it depends what it is going to cost you.

And getting into UNC-CH OOS is extraordinarily difficult. But if you can, go for UNC.

I’ve gotten into both (I’m instate for tx)…I’m just having an extremely hard time deciding :/

Oh wow, congrats! See what fin-aid you got offered for each then go from there.

UNC-CH. Just visited there, and LOVED it. It has all of the resources of a big school, but the intense selectivity makes it feel academically like a small LAC. Despite the relative large size, the classes are small, especially if you take honors classes. Everyone I talked to at the college (not just on the tour) was extremely enjoying it. Chapel Hill is a great college town, and the resources provided by the Research Triangle match or exceed those in Austin. The weather is also milder for NC.

That being said, UT will likely be less money. I’d say, see what you get from UNC. If you got in out of state, you may be in line for nomination for scholarships or the Honors Program.

UNC is nice but Austin>>>>Chapel Hill. I don’t see any bang for the buck at UNC. Few depts at UNC are any better than those at UT and UT has far more. UT is large but rich. UNC spends so much on health sciences the rest may get short-changed. UT has one of the top honors programs–Plan Two. Very selective. Also UNC is only intensely selective for OOS which is a small portion of the students. The rest are from NC and more good state flagship average.

Even as a Duke guy, I would go to UNC in a heartbeat if faced with this choice. UNC is significantly more prestigious and academically-renowned IMHO.

In what exactly?? I would say slightly more prestige for UNC and no significant difference in academic respect among other academics. On the less biased ARWU rankings UT is 38 and UNC is 41. Given cost and other considerations UT seems a logical choice unless money does not matter.

Texas is a large state school whose administration can’t effectively allocate their resources to the strengthen the undergrad experience of their students in the way that UNC can.

UNC may be slightly better at the undergrad level, but in terms of overall resources, faculty, and Top-ranked academic depts, it doesnt really come close to UT.

For what I want to do, UT.

Austin is the best city in the South (in my opinion).

7th or 8th ranked CS program in the country.

UNC is more prestigious and has a better overall reputation than UT, but I think you’d be absolutely fine going to either school. Go with the place where you feel like you’d be happier.
