Does anybody know anything about the finance department at cal poly? What are job prospects after and chances of working on wall street or going to grad school after? Would I be wrong to turn down UCSD math-econ for finance at cal poly SLO? All help is appreciated!
What would your major be at SLO? Econ with a finance concentration? Or would you do Business Admin? Can you double major in math or comp sci?
Is there a significant net cost difference with UCSD?
Do you like SLO better than UCSD?
@Dunboyne business admin, and I think trying to double major withe those will be extremely hard to even obtain since getting in those majors is so competitive. Cost isn’t that big of a deal and I feel comfortable at both schools
@Dunboyne actually double majoring in math would be easy to obtain
Adding a major in math/compsci at SLO would be really useful (~necessary) in order to approximate what you’re getting at UCSD, for a career in finance, due to the modern-day demand for quantitative skills in that field. UCSD is solid in both math and econ and if you have no preference for campus fit, it would be hard to turn down. A combined math/econ program is sensible for finance, especially if you have grad school in sight. If you want to do business admin, for finance, a more renowned program is probably in order. Let’s say the math is a wash (at an undergrad level), so you’re comparing UCSD econ with SLO business. I’d say SD econ is the more reputable program/department, and it will take you further in the job market or with grad school. If you had other career goals in business, then SLO becomes more attractive, but for finance/Wall Street, I’d go with the higher quantitative rigour and training in abstract thought (econ).
@Dunboyne thanks so much!
