I am a sophomore running for a leadership position in a club. I genuinely love the club and genuinely want the position so that I can improve and lead the club. I am not doing this for college apps. I truly believe that I am best fit for this position given my skill set and passion for the club.
How do I get more people to know and vote for me?
Also, tips on writing and delivering a speech would be really helpful!
*This election is not the type where people create Facebook pages, put up posters, come up with a slogan, or pass out candy. All the candidates just give speeches.
How do I get more people to know and vote for me:
Do you have any sort of social media account (twitter, facebook, instagram, etc.). If so, then join a school group or follow someone you know from your school (cuz they most probably will know other people, and those other people will know other people etc) and let everyone know that you're running for this position. If you don't have a social media account or if you want a more direct and effective way to get more votes, then try asking a school administrator or your club teacher if you can put posters on the school hallways. If so, then try to make them as creative and out-going as possible, but not too flashy. Let everyone who walks by know clearly that you want their vote.
Tips on writing and delivering a speech:
If you're doing a speech, I suggest you start by looking at yourself and genuinely finding a good reason for you to be considered as a leader. Think about your good qualities and express those on paper in a clear and concise way. Don't sound arrogant, but also don't be modest. Start early and make a good rough draft, edit it, read it over, etc. Once you've made a rough draft of your speech, have multiple people read it over and make sure you take their constructive criticism and improve your speech as much as you can. Finally, start practicing your speech in front of your friends, by yourself, in front of a mirror, etc. Make sure that you know a lot of your speech by heart. Once the day comes for delivering your speech, make sure you sound confident and believe in yourself. Don't be nervous and look everyone in the eye while delivering your speech. Don't stutter and talk like you really want the position.
Understand your topic. Think about examples of things you want to do. Think about what you have done.
"I have been involved in the cookie sale for two years and and ran it this year. I enjoyed working with everyone as a team. I would like to take that sense of teamwork into next year where as president, I want to get ideas early in the year for what are goals should be. I would like to continue with the yearly service project as well as introduce a new project such as xxx.
Practice your speech. Read it out loud in front of a mirror and practice looking at yourself. Read it in front of your parents/friends.
Also talk to other members of the club about what you want to do with the club.
