Alright, so I am really interested in breaking into investment banking. I want to know which college I should go to for undergraduate while taking into account money. My family EFC will be zero.
UIUC- in state tuition. Absolutely love the school. Direct admit to business school.
UMich- probably about 20K per year more than UIUC. Not direct admit to Ross as freshman.
Northwestern- visited. Thought it was OK, not great though. Don't like how there is no business undergrad. Not sure about price here.

Which choice should I make? Any choices even better? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

UIUC is a sold semi target with a decent alumni base if you work hard and network from there you can make it on the street. One of the most competent people I’ve met graduated from UIUC and is big on helping recruit there.

The other two listed aren’t great schools and would provide arguably better opportunities but only relatively.

The best one you can get into. If you’re trying to get into investment banking, choosing a school like uiuc over some place like northwestern is shortsighted at best.

^^ How is northwestern not a great school?
It’s arguably the top target in the midwest. I’ve also seen a hell of a lot of people from northwestern at my superdays.
Its only real competition for the chicago market is U of Chicago.

The autocorrect on my phone won the day again. I meant “are” good schools and I followed it by saying that you would find BETTER opportunities at both U Mich and northwestern. However, depending on the amount of debt one has to take out compared to a semi target it may not be the best choice.

9 times out of 10 you should always opt for the more prestigious school but I have a soft spot for non-targets breaking in. You could worse than UIUC, but angryelf is right your life will probably be easier at northwestern.

Consider Indiana. It is better than UIUC for investment banking, and will cost you about the same as UIUC in-state with the automatic IU $9,000 scholarship. Lots of Illinois students per their resumes.
