So I was randomly chosen by Fafsa to verify my information with colleges. I called Fafsa and they told me I would have to call the college I want to go to for a verification worksheet. What is that? and do I have to fill it out?

Yes, if asked for verification you must submit the information the school asks for. What you need to send is dependent on the school, so call and see what you must do.

Why on earth would you think that if chosen for FAFSA verification that you would not have to do it?

I want to ask one more thing on this thread, what are they asking for when they say to send Parent’s Income tax return Transcript? I need help and am lost.

This is what they want:

[Order a Transcript](Get Transcript | Internal Revenue Service)

Thanks for giving me the link I couldn’t find it but I got another question what is the transcript like what for it have is it the same as a 1040 or something? Thanks for answering.

The link works for me; google ‘IRS transcript’ and you should be able to get to the website where you can order a transcript of your parents Fed tax return.

Here’s an explanation of an IRS transcript:

[Copies of Prior Year Federal Tax Returns and/or a Transcript](http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Copies-of-Prior-Year-Federal-Tax-Returns-and-or-a-Transcript)

If this doesn’t work for you, t’s the second google link after the one for ordering.

All right so it is not what my parents filled out at the taxing agencies, correct? And thanks for my mindless questions.

Sorry, I don’t know what your parents would have filed out, this would be some kind of report about their IRS filing that comes from the IRS so that it verifies the numbers you reported on FA forms.

When you are selected for verification of income, you must either use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (right on your FAFSA - update “will file” to the type of return that was filed and the DRT link will pop up) or provide a tax transcript that you ordered from the IRS. If your parents filed separately, you cannot use the DRT - you have to provide a tax transcript for each parent. If you used the DRT but changed any numbers that were returned from the transfer, you have to provide the tax transcript to prove the numbers.

Anyone who is not required to file a tax return and did not file one needs to contact the school to get their non-filer form (some allow you to just submit a signed statement - but you won’t know until you ask).

In theory, yes it is the same (or a summary of it). Colleges used to require a copy of the 1040 filed. I’m guessing that a lot of people turned in phoney 1040’s. Thus, a transcript is required, which is from the IRS that says this is what was filed.

Now, that doesn’t stop someone from filing a 1040 in February, getting a transcript, and then filing an amended 1040 in April.
