I really hope you are right.

Question: What do they mean by "signed copies of" fed-tax returns and schd.?

I see no signatures on these forms =-/

theonekid - when a person submits the tax return on 4/15, s/he signs the first page at the bottom. that is the only signed page, so you want a copy of what your father actually sent, with his signature in that spot. I suppose if he didn't keep a signed copy, you could have him sign the copy you now have.

Yea I just turned mine in today with all three family member's tax returns from last year ~~ I think thats all you need for now, unless they tell you otherwise.

"Looking at the website re deadlines, it looks like the BUFS is due 2/10 along with the CSS Profile. So, you have time. The basic Financial Aid app is due 1/1.
http://finaid.cornell.edu/Prospecti...veDeadlines.htm

Unless I'm misreading - anyone?"

I inferred the same thing jmmom. I think the mention of the BUFS in the instructions of Cornell FA application form that is due 1/1 is merely to advise applicants that Cornell is one of the universities that requires the supplement [eventually]. Some universities require the CSS Profile without the BUFS supplement, some require the Profile plus BUFS...I think Cornell was just clarifying that it does require the supplement when the CSS Profile is submitted (2/10). There is really no way to properly complete the BUFS now without the 2005 tax return info, so I didn't submit it yet.

Filling it out partially is another option, but I didn't want to create and sign two documents that contradicted each other.

theonekid-

Yes jmmom is right. Most tax return copies are unsigned...just get your dad to sign and date it. I'd ask your dad to use his actual filing date or 4/15/2005.

theonekid-

btw...I know at the end of all of this, you are gonna want to change your major to accounting right? (JK..lol!)

This process is so difficult and tedious...as I've said, I'm a CPA and former auditor, but I still have a tax accountant do our taxes. (my dirty little secret...ha!)

On the BUFS (Business/Farm Supplement), 13 g... I don't understand what we have to list or "itemize." Can anyone explain?

Is this the 1040 form? If so.. How do I know which is the first page and where exactly does my father sign (I see no place for signature or date)

Ugh I totally forgot to sign and date this..am I screwed?

BTW: Why would I use 4/15/2005

and... hmm I still dont know where he signs (and date)

My mistake, theonekid. It is the second page where the signature goes. Here is what the blank 1040 looks like.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf

wicked - if you've already sent, I would just send that one page again today, and explain.

syneria - does your parent file the Schedule C? If so, I believe 13g would contain the total amount for all the expenses on Sched C, which you haven't already put on the BUFS 13 a-f. Remember that you have until 2/10 - we think - for this form to go to Cornell. (see above posts #20, 25).

Why would I use the 4/15/2005 date.. (BTW I have no access to the actual date)

I think she meant 4/15/2004. Use that if you can't find out the actual date. I have to hand it to you kids doing this on your own, sometimes with no cooperations from the parents. You are winners!

I still dont understand why that date (btw isnt 2004 too early?)...

EDIT: Okay I found out why that day.. but still wondering what year is correct!!!

If it is the copy of last year's return, which covered the year 2004, then the date would be 4/15/2005 (that is the deadline for filing 2004 taxes - see I misspoke again! in #34).

Yeppers...you got it.

Tax returns for fiscal year 2004 were due on 4/15/2005; for fiscal year 2005 they will be due on 4/15/2006. Of course with FAFSAs and CSS Profiles+BUFS due as early as February 1 for some schools, I'm sure we'll all be trying to crank those FY2005 tax returns out much earlier than 4/15/2006.

theonekid...did you get your forms together and in the mail today? I'm very impressed with how you handled all of this. Also, haven't checked the Cornell board this evening...but earlier, there were quite a few kids posting who missed the deadline altogether. Hopefully Cornell will be a little flexible.

Helpful Hint: I've mentioned this before. Try to get those FAFSAs and CSS Profiles in asap if you are after gov't subsidized grants and zero interest loans. The money is awarded 'first come first served' and there is definitely not enough for everyone applying for assistance. Be the early bird if you can.

how is everyone doing their finaid going to get it postmarked? I thought the post office was closed?

I got mine sent in today (after a night of grueling number pumping, Adobe typing, etc). If you didn't get it done, follow these following directions, and just give it to the post office the next business day:

Also remember that financial aid numbers can be estimated and corrected later. The schools ask for completeness and accuracy and prefer to see corrected information, even if it comes a bit later -in the form of an amendment.

Lastly, as far as mailing deadlines, it is good to remember that the mail won't be processed for several days and that a little delay should not matter at all.

Means you just gotta go on to USPS.com and print out those ickle labels by today (12/31) or tomorrow (1/1). :) I <3 Xiggi so much right now.

If you're confused, I guess I'll just refer you to my other thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=133654

sighs with relief thank god. I love Xiggi too. Let's start a cult. After I do my fin. aid.
