I have a 28 ACT (31 E, 25 M, 30 R, 24 S, 10 Essay), 3.2 UW GPA, URM, applying from California.

Right now I am only applying to Trinity, Occidental, and Richmond. I realize all of these are reach schools but I do have some instate safeties. I'd like to add more matches but I'm having trouble finding colleges that fit my interests and at least a decent chance of admission due to my low GPA. I'm looking for a small to mid sized school that has strong programs in international relations and Arabic with good financial aid (most likely Pell grant recipient).

Your problem is your GPA is too low for colleges that meet need, which in general are top colleges. If you’re NA or an AA male, some of the less selective schools in this category may be worth a shot. I’m thinking St. Olaf, Macalester, Bates.

I’m hispanic. I go to a prep school which I think will make my GPA look a little better, and I’ve also had a challenging course load. (7 APs, several honors)

Waverly, I really wanted to apply to Bates and Colby but aren’t they more selective than the schools I already have?

They are similar, but work harder to get URMs because of location. Unfortunately Hispanic isn’t the boost the others are. Are you on a competitive scholarship at the prep school? D you come from an inner city or low income rural area? Frst gen? Those things would help.

The schools in the MW and South are probably your best bets.

My DECA nationals partner was a talented half-hispanic girl, and I think she had a 28 ACT and grades weren’t stellar. Her primary EC was research at the state flagship- she got into Johns Hopkins University ED! Although what Waverly is saying is certainly valid, know that you still have a decent chance at the schools you are considering. But definitely consider the colleges she suggested because 3 just isn’t very many.

Look into Dickinson College ¶. The school emphasizes a “global education” and has Arabic & Int’l Studies. Your GPA seems a bit low, but the school is a bit less competitive than Richmond & Trinity I think (and I’d think it helps being an URM from a good HS in CA). Good luck.
