Need some help regrouping. Where should I apply?

Wake Forest right now, but it concerns me that they don’t ask for the sat as that’s one of my strong points. They’re also very expensive.

I think the SAT is optional for Wake…I think you can still send it…or are they not accepting test scores at all?

Have your dad run the NPC on Wake’s and W&L’s website. If you think that Wake is expensive, then so is W&L (both are nearly the exact same price!!!). I imagine that both would give similar aid if you have “determined need.”

You do need to have your dad run those NPCs, because you may find out that neither of those schools are affordable.

Has your dad said how much he’ll pay each year?

It appears that you want to become an attorney? If so, don’t borrow much for undergrad…you’ll have big debt for law school.

To be honest, I’m surprised you didn’t get in. I looked up online and found a Washington Post article that reported that W&L’s ED acceptance rate was only 18% for class 2019 - don’t know how many students that translated into. You’ve still got a shot RD. The suggestions you got - Richmond, Sewanee, Bucknell - are all good. I wouldn’t give up on Yale, etc. either - you really don’t know what any particular college or university is going to zero in on. There are other small liberal arts in Pennsylvania, too. Dickinson, Gettysburg, Haverford - not sure what deadlines are, but I do know that both Dickinson and Gettysburg only have a short “Why X?” supplemental You would be a candidate for the top financial aid award at both, too. Good luck.

Thanks again for the responses. I just sent out some more apps in the last week to jan. 1 schools.

mom2 We can afford wake or W&L, my dad just wanted to get the best school for the money, and we were of the opinion that W&L was of a higher calibre (we could have been wrong)

yaupon, I have a question. The week before results, my guidance counselor told me that W&L had called for grades, which she had given them. She also said that she had presented me very strongly, saying that the school doesn’t get many students with such strong academics and drive and that I was one of the best students she’d seen in her career. BUT, the week of the call my AP English teacher inputted a 5/5 quiz on everyone’s gradebook as a 5/100, my grade instantly dropped 10 points from an A to a B. I told my guidance counselor this, but she thought it would seem desperate to call back.
Since W&L bothered to make the call, I think the B might have been a deciding factor, can I somehow rectify the mistake?
All A’s and a B to all A’s might make the difference?

Thanks a lot everyone!

@thecthaeh, your guidance counselor can call the W&L admissions rep for your area (or the one who called her about you), explain the grade error, and reinforce that you are a strong candidate who is very interested in the school. That’s not desperate at this point (I can see how your GC might have thought it so before the ED decisions were announced); it’s certainly not at all unusual for students deferred in the ED round to make contact to express their continued commitment to the school and to update the admissions office with any new awards, achievements, grades, etc.

One B seems like too small a thing to be a deciding factor, but in an ED pool of increasingly competitive applicants, decisions can be made on the finest of points.

Here’s the link to the Washington Post article I believe @4Gulls referenced. Note that the ED results for the class of 2019 are for a handful of schools NOT including W&L. The 18% admissions rate for W&L reported in the article is the overall rate for the class of 2018. ED rates are typically higher.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/early-admission-rates-for-class-of-2019/2014/12/18/67db5036-86c4-11e4-9534-f79a23c40e6c_story.html

Even with the ED deferral, you still look like a good fit for W&L. Pursue other schools, but continue to show that demonstrated interest that W&L likes. We know a number of current students who were deferred ED but accepted RD.

I agree with @yaupon‌ but I’d be shocked if that’s what made the difference. I know waiting sucks, but you will probably just have to wait until RD decisions, like I said before I think you have a decent shot.

I think my interview went well, but i’m worried that the thank you I mailed was a little lackluster…

Sorry about that - I was looking up ED rates and misread the data on W&L. Thanks yaupon for catching. I still think you’ve got a very good chance and would certainly make it clear to W&L that it’s still your first choice. Good luck.

I doubt it…they’re peer schools.

I agree that Yale and all top 10 universities/LACs are basically out of reach, but do apply to one or two since you never know. The problem is that you have all reaches next, and one safety. That’s a very unbalanced list. Did you at least apply to UGA Honors?
I second Centre, Sewanee, URichmond, Bucknell, Dickinson, Rhodes.
Perhaps add George Mason, American, Clemson?

Hi, I applied to the Jan.1 schools, and am currently applying to honors at UGA. I am currently finishing up my app to Presbyterian, but I only have a few more days to send SAT’s, and I’m not sure what 1 or 2 more schools I want to apply to.

MYOS Do you think Emory and Wake are reaches for me? I was counting on making it into the oxford campus …

4gulls sorry i missed your comment, how would you recommend making it known that I am still interested? Should I call and try to talk about why my app was rejected, or send a letter, or what?

I think you have a shot (match) at Emory Oxford and Wake, indeed, but they’re selective enough that they’re far, far from certain; have you applied to Sewanee, Centre, or Rhodes?
Perhaps, have someone review your application in case something jumps at them.
